Job overview
We are currently looking to recruit an Occupational Therapy Assistant to join our Children's Occupational Therapy Team.
We are a small enthusiastic and hard-working team based in the Child Development Centre. We provide a service for children with neurodevelopmental difficulties or concerns around engagement within meaningful daily activities. You will be part of a supportive multi-disciplinary team and the role will involve providing support to children, young people and their families across Peterborough.
The ideal candidate will have a strong team work ethic, sense of accountability and an ability to work under pressure at times. Main duties of the job
• To assist the Occupational Therapists and work as part of the Occupational Therapy team, to provide the highest standard of care working in community paediatrics (for children aged between 0 to 19 years).
• To implement and evaluate delegated OT interventions in activities relating to their treatment programme.
• To actively participate & work with a range of other professional teams, which may include Education, Health and Social Care.
• To work alone in domiciliary and community settings as well as part of the Community Paediatric and wider Child Development Unit teams.
• To undertake administrative duties to support the clinical practice of the Community Paediatric Occupational Therapy team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. To be legally responsible, and accountable for all aspects of your work conduct, including management of patients and their care. To ensure a high standard of care for the patients you treat and support other staff to do likewise.
2. To assist the OT during the assessment process & to contribute to the treatment programme.
3. To carry out treatment programmes to individuals or groups, following assessment by a qualified OT, to monitor treatment progress & to report that progress to the responsible OT.
4. To implement minor treatment changes within defined parameters.
5. To carry a caseload of paediatric patients whose overall care is supervised by a qualified OT, & whose condition is relatively predictable.
6. To practise unsupervised in a variety of settings & conditions ensuring access to a qualified professional at all times.
7. To communicate advice & information, teaching & monitoring simple techniques (such as therapy programmes) to relatives, carers, and school staff & to promote understanding of the aims of OT & thus ensuring a consistent approach to patient care.
8. To communicate effectively with community paediatric patients & their carers using skills of encouragement, motivation, explanation and gaining informed consent. Barriers to effective communication will regularly be evident. E.g. loss of hearing, and/or vision, altered perception, expressive and receptive dysphasia, pain and fear. Many patients will lack the capacity to consent.
9. To maintain accurate, comprehensive and contemporaneous documentation in line with legal and departmental requirements.
10. To be responsible for the safe use of equipment used in carrying out OT duties, adhering to the department’s medical devices policy.
11. To demonstrate & teach the use of appropriate equipment to children, carers & other staff e.g. seating
12. To represent the Community Paediatric OT team in meetings as & when deemed necessary.
