Occupational Therapist / Return to Practice

Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic Band 5 Occupational Therapist  (OT) to join our Intensive Support Team (IST) for adults with learning disabilities, in Peterborough. The post can be as a progression for return to practice OT's or OT students undertaking the course waiting to qualify. If successful you would work as a band 3 OT assistant until receiving your registration.

This team offers  a unique opportunity to develop your skills and build on your experience of working with adults with learning disabilities with a diverse, fascinating range of complex needs.

Our goal is to support service users to remain in the community when in crisis, by offering additional mental health support, therapy, and treatment. We support the transition of service users to return from out of area placements and work with services supporting young people to prevent them having to leave Peterborough unnecessarily. 

We are looking for an OT to work as part of multidisciplinary team. You will be supporting Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) plans, sensory processing and integration assessments, completing tasks to promote individuals to have a meaningful life. A key part of your role will be working with the wider team to develop greater understanding of people’s difficulties. As a team we are passionate about development and providing the best possible care for our service users. 

Main duties of the job

To collaboratively work with the individuals with Learning Disabilities who have complex needs referred to our service when in a crisis to restore or create a match between the abilities of the person, the demands of activities/ occupations, and environment to improve function and access to opportunities for meaningful participation in daily life.

Interventions underpinned by the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO) and the principles of recovery, enablement, compassionate care, optimism, hope and unconditional positive regard. 

To work collaboratively with all disciplines as part of a multi-disciplinary team to assure a high standard of care for patient/clients and their relatives/carers, under supervision of a Senior Occupational Therapist.

To apply a level of understanding of the impact of mental health difficulties, behaviours that challenge and sensory processing difficulties has on occupational performance.

To provide specialist Occupational Therapy assessments of adults with Learning Disabilities referred based upon the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of data from a variety of sources including OT assessments, self-report measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others involved in the client’s care and welfare.

To be responsible for implementing a range of OT interventions for individuals, carers, families and groups, within and across teams,

To exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment, direct interventions and discharge of clients, and to manage and maintain a caseload with support of senior OT.

Education /Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Minimum Bachelor level equivalent training in Occupational Therapy.
  • • HCPC Professional Registration as an Occupational Therapist.
Desirable criteria
  • • Member of the Royal college of Occupational Therapy (RCOT)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Working with people with learning disabilities
  • • Understanding of the needs of people with learning disabilities in crisis.
  • • Working as part of a team.
  • • Liaison and support work with carers and families
  • • Working with people with learning disabilities a range of mental health problems.

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act.
  • • Knowledge of relevant mental health legislation. E.g. MHA, MCA & DoLS.
  • • Clear communication skills both written and verbal.
  • • Good team worker with effective interpersonal skills.
  • • Manage own caseload.
  • • To cope with the pressure of working in intensive environment.
  • • Computer / IT skills.
  • • Advocate on behalf of the patient.
  • • Ability to participate in risk assessments and implementation of management plans.
  • • Knowledge of Occupational Therapy assessment, intervention, and practice models relevant to the client group (MOHO).
Desirable criteria
  • • Knowledge of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS)
  • • Specialist knowledge of OT assessment, intervention, and practice models relevant to the client group (sensory Processing integration)

Personal Qualities

Essential criteria
  • • Motivated towards personal and professional development.
  • • Able to make professional relationships with wider MDT on wards and in community services.
  • • May involve activity such as sport, related to goals of the individual being worked with.
  • • Basic understanding of safe equipment provision (E.g. physical health, sensory need).
Desirable criteria
  • • Willingness to undertake Sensory Integration Training
