In-House Interpreter (Portuguese) - Peterborough

Job overview

To provide interpretation in Portuguese language, when requested by medical staff, to patients, relatives and carers with limited proficiency in English, whilst they are receiving care and treatment at the Peterborough City Hospital and to assist in promoting the interpreting service in the Trust. 

 

Main duties of the job

  • Provide face-to-face interpretation for all non-English speaking patients (Portuguese) who require assistance when attending an appointment or procedure etc.
  • Translate Trust patient information literature into  or Portuguese, for distribution as necessary.
  • If necessary, advise medical and nursing staff of cultural differences for non-English speaking patients. (Portuguese)
  • Promote the services to all departments at the Trust.
  • To support when requested by staff, external bookings with the current service provider including booking on the relevant portal.
  • Ensure that patients confidentiality is maintained at all times and work within the remit of the Trust Patient Confidentiality Policy.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of the professional boundaries relevant to the role of an interpreter.
  • Deal with telephone and face-to-face enquiries in a professional manner.
  • Maintain communication links with the appropriate individuals, departments, and external sources.
  • Work with colleagues to maintain a team approach.
  • Participate in training sessions as appropriate
  • A flexible attitude towards the role that is expected.
  • The post holder must be conversant with national and local policy regards health and safety, data protection and equal opportunities.
  • The post holder will be based at Peterborough City Hospital and may be required to attend appointments at Stamford Hospital, the City Care Centre and Hinchingbrooke Hospital.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to GSCE or equivalent standard
  • GCSE or equivalent in English language
Desirable criteria
  • Degree qualifications or equivalent in relevant subject
  • Medical interpreting qualification; e.g. Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI) or equivalent experience

Skills and Knowledge

  • Computer literate and general office/administrative experience
