Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within General Surgery at Peterborough City Hospital.  We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our very busy and dedicated admin team.

The successful candidate will provide administrative support to the Senior Medical Secretary and clinical team within the Department and also ensure the provision of an effective, efficient and professional service for our patients.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be expected to perform a high level of secretarial and administration tasks within the service.  You will need to be able to work efficiently, with a high degree of accuracy and work flexibly and confidentially across the Trust independently and as part of a team liaising with colleagues at all levels.

You will have good communication skills and will be responsive to the needs of the service. You will be a point of contact for patients, speciality teams and other departments for all enquiries relating to patients. You will be responsible for the tracking and management of patient pathways in accordance with the National targets.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to GCSE level standard, English Language at Grade A-C (or equivalent)
  • RSA II typing or equivalent experience
  • Audio typing qualification or recent relevant experience
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ II or III Business Administration

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of using MS Office, particularly MS Word and Outlook
  • Previous Secretarial/Office experience
  • Experience of working with the general public and/or professionals
  • Demonstrate and understanding of customer care/ability to work with sensitive and confidential information
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working within the NHS and an understanding of medical terminology
  • Experience of using Hospital systems, for example PAS (Patient Administration System)

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and understanding of Confidentiality and the Data Protection ACT
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding and working practice of NHS performance targets including 18 week referral to treatment times

  • Good standard of written and verbal communication at all levels
