Named Nurse/Professional for Adult Safeguarding

North West Anglia Foundation Trust (NWAFT) is committed to tackling all forms of abuse affecting people across their lifespan and promoting a ‘Think Family’ approach.  The Safeguarding team is an established team of professionals, who have strong partnership working with Operational teams, Local Authority and multi-agency bodies, to ensure that we meet the statutory responsibilities whilst delivering safe and effective care to vulnerable individuals and families.

The Named Nurse for Adult Safeguarding, MCA/DoLs , will work in close partnership with the Named and lead for Children’s safeguarding, Named & Lead midwife for Safeguarding. This role reports to Head of Safeguarding and is accountable to the Chief Nurse at North West Anglia Foundation Trust (NWAFT).

This role will ensure that the Trust fulfils its statutory duties to safeguard and protect adults at risk under the Care Act (2014) and associated legislation. The post holder will ensure that the Trust meets its statutory responsibilities in line with The Mental Capacity Act (2005), Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (2009) and Liberty Protection Safeguards legislation. The post hold will provide effective operational direction for the implementation and management of the legislative changes required for Liberty Protection Safeguards (LPS), supporting adherence to the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) (2005) and the existing DOLS provisions.

 This is an integral role with the Trust’s safeguarding working in partnership, whilst being responsible as co-ordinator of the service for NWAFT professionals, and partner agencies that have concerns in relation to this area of service provision and care.

The post holder will be required to ensure that NWAFT is compliant with Care Quality Commission (CQC) standards and discharges its statutory/legislative obligations and responsibilities with the Head of Safeguarding (HOS).  This role will provide professional leadership and management to the Safeguarding team, but more specifically will line manage the Lead Adult post, (Band 7 Safeguarding Lead).

To work in collaboration with local/regional teams including Integrated Care System (ICS), Safeguarding Boards and in line with jointly agreed local, regional and national safeguarding Policies and guidance. This role will provide expertise, professional leadership, advice support and expert guidance, including legal aspects of care, in respect of safeguarding Children, Adults, to the Safeguarding Services within NWAFT.

This role will oversee and ensure monthly and quarterly reports are formulated and reviewed for quality assurance committee and interim/full safeguarding committee meetings with overall sign off by Head of safeguarding. The reports will mainly cover the safeguarding Adult and MCA portfolio. In partnership with the Head of Safeguarding ensure that a safeguarding training strategy is in place. Whilst actively participating in the designing and delivery of the training across all disciplines.

Use existing knowledge and expertise and enhanced levels of clinical judgement to independently undertake complex and holistic assessments. 

Act independently to plan, deliver, monitor and evaluate complex care using enhanced clinical assessments, diagnostics, and interventions.

Act as an expert resource within their own organisation and for external agencies. 

Communicate effectively in challenging environments and situations with patients, their families/carers and the multi-disciplinary team. 

Promote and encourage innovative clinical practice to support a culture of excellence within the wider health and care team. 

Lead and manage unpredictable and unplanned clinical situations. 

Participate in resource management, strategic service development, planning and service improvement.

Education and Qualifications

  • • Registered Professional, e.g. registered nurse (NMC) AHP, HCPC or SW
  • • Working towards master’s degree in an appropriate health related subject or equivalent or working towards LPS assessor
  • • Evidence of continuing professional development

  • • Post registration qualification in safeguarding (expected to completed pathway within 2 years in post)

Experience

  • Experience of leading safeguarding at a senior level, egg, Named Professional
  • Expert knowledge of national safeguarding policy and legislation, including the Equality Act 2010, Children Acts and the Care Act, MCA, DOL’s
  • Evidence demonstrating leadership, education and service development achievements
  • Evidence of the proactive involvement in the supervision and development of members of the multi-disciplinary team demonstrating strong coaching and mentoring skills
  • Some evidence of leading the development of programmes of care, protocols, audit and research.
  • Evidence of leadership in teaching and mentoring learners and training need analysis

  • Able to demonstrate wide knowledge of health policy and its application in practice
  • Experience in the completion of Individual Management Reviews, Domestic Homicide Reviews and Safeguarding Adult Reviews
  • Experience of working across statutory bodies and organisations
