Job overview

We are looking for talented and motivated individuals to join the department with sound scientific skills able to lead the department through the changes over the next few years. . The post holder will be based at the satellite centre.

Interviews to be held onsite in person at Velindre Cancer Centre, Cardiff CF14 2TL.

·      The post holder manages the team responsible for the reactive and planned maintenance of the linear accelerators used for radiotherapy treatment at the Velindre Radiotherapy Satellite Unit.

·     The postholder ensures the linear accelerators are maintained, repaired and safe, keeping the patient radiotherapy service operational.

·      The postholder acts as Deputy to the Section Manager for Clinical Engineering who is based at Velindre Cancer Centre.

Main duties of the job

The post holder manages the team responsible for the reactive and planned maintenance of the linear accelerators used for radiotherapy treatment at the Velindre Radiotherapy Satellite Unit. This involves ensuring the linear accelerators are maintained, repaired and safe, keeping the patient radiotherapy service operational and managing the radiotherapy service requirements for cover as service demands change. 

The post holder is the Radiation Protection Supervisor during reactive and planned maintenance of radiotherapy equipment and is responsible for ensuring compliance with IRR17 and the local rules. 

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Here at Velindre University NHS Trust we are extremely proud of the specialist services we provide across the whole of Wales in our cutting-edge Velindre Cancer Centre and our award-winning Welsh Blood Service, as well as the expertise of our corporate functions that bring the two divisions together. We are also fortunate to host the NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership and Health Technology Wales and have developed strong partnership working with these expert services. 

The Radiotherapy Service at Velindre Cancer Centre is undergoing significant transformation, which will continue for several years. Currently there are 8 linear accelerators (4 Varian and 4 Elekta) and an Elekta Flexitron for brachytherapy treatments. A replacement programme of all treatment devices, Oncology Information Systems and Treatment Planning Systems is underway; the first Varian Halcyon machine was installed in January 2023 with another being installed in September 2023. A radiotherapy satellite centre is due to open in Abergavenny in 2025, with a new Velindre Cancer Centre due to open in 2027. Radiotherapy equipment at the new centre will include Varian BRAVOS brachytherapy, 6 Varian Halcyon machines, 2 Varian Truebeams (HD) and a dedicated research machine.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MSc or Equivalent in Electrical & Electronic Engineering or related subject. Or equivalent of BSc in Electronic & Electrical Engineering or related subject with demonstrable master’s level experience.
  • Attended and successfully completed Radiotherapy treatment equipment Manufacturers’ advanced training courses.
  • Management qualification.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of Quality Assurance schemes and principles in RT.
  • IET Membership (or an equivalent professional body)
  • IOSH Managing Safely Course

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable experience in Linear Accelerator maintenance and the management assistance of an Engineering Section
  • Experience of maintaining the full range of Treatment Machines and Radiation Physics Equipment at this Centre.
Desirable criteria
  • Member of the Register of Clinical Technologists.

Aptitude and Abilities

Essential criteria
  • Proven experience managing staff and service requirements.
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to speak Welsh to level 1
