Job overview

This is a Specialist grade post, for the PHW microbiology service to the Hywel Dda University Health Board. In this role you will join the expanding clinical infection team delivering services to Hywel Dda University Health Board and supporting the wider Public Health Wales network.

The post holder is managerially accountable to the Executive Director of Health Protection and Screening Services, Public Health Wales Trust, through the Director of Infection Services and the Clinical Lead of the Infection Services to Hywel Dda University Health Board.  Applicants will be ideally expected to be Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists and/or Member of the Royal College of Physicians.

 

Main duties of the job

Applicants shall

  • have full registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council and shall have completed a minimum of 12 years’ medical work (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification of which a minimum of six years should have been in an Infectious disease or microbiology specialty in the Specialty Doctor and/or closed SAS grades. Equivalent years’ experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades including from overseas will also be accepted.

The successful applicant may expect to be offered an honorary contract with Hywel Dda University Health Board.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Strategic and professional leadership and communication:

The appointee will ensure a culture of maintenance and continuous improvement of quality. In this role, the appointee will:

  • Promote multi-professional team working within the department
  • Ensure appropriate communication and team working with other services in the Public Health Wales Trust and with services in the other Trusts, Health Boards, and health communities served by Microbiology HDUHB.
  • Contribute to departmental meetings
  • Contribute to service developments and improvements
  • Contribute to developing patient-focused pathways
  • Contribute to clinical audit, review, and planning of services
  • Develop business cases as appropriate
  • Contribute to the development of the service in line with the Public Health Wales Trust Infection Service network objectives and the national and local Pathology Modernisation agenda
  • Consult all sections of the service about changes, including the procurement of equipment
  • Contribute to the developing and strengthening of working relationships with primary/community care providers and commissioners

EDUCATIONAL AND OCCUPATIONAL ATTAINMENTS

Essential criteria
  • Full registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council;
  • completed at least twelve years’ full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least four of which will be in Infectious Diseases or Microbiology specialty training programme or shall have equivalent experience and competencies
Desirable criteria
  • MRCP or an equivalent qualification
  • FRCPath or an equivalent qualification
  • CCT/ equivalence (ideally in Microbiology and/or Infectious Diseases)
