Job overview

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Metabolic Medicine, working 5 sessions per week, based at University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.

The post holder will deliver general IMD services for adults, joint provision for the lysosomal storage disease service (clinical), and clinical support for the Cardiff Porphyria Service.  This includes out-of-hours cover for both IMD and acute porphyria services.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services.  

Applicants should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / CESR(CP) at the time of interview.

You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales.  The basic salary range for this post is £53,000 per annum to £77,380 per annum for a 5-session commitment.

Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 years of their employment/training history in full.  In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for service provision and leadership, with colleagues, for the inherited metabolic disease and porphyria services.

There is a commitment to out-of-hours cover for the IMD service and National Acute Porphyria Service, working week service cover for CPS, and unscheduled activity for the IMD and CPS service.

Academic interests will be encouraged; research and teaching in collaboration with Cardiff University’s School of Medicine will be expected.

Essential criteria
  • On GMC Specialist Register for specialty / Specialty Registrar with CCT/CESR (Combined Programme) due within 6 months of interview date
  • FRCPath or equivalent
  • MRCP or equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Broad general training in Clinical Biochemistry & Metabolic Medicine
  • Clinical experience in adult inherited metabolic disease
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in general internal medicine

Skills
