The role of the Communications Division is to protect and promote the reputation of Public Health Wales as a trusted, credible and collaborative organisation with our key audiences: the public in Wales, politicians and policy makers, our partners and staff.
The purpose of the Assistant Communications Officer’s job is to support the Communications Officers, Communications Managers and Senior Communications Managers in the development and delivery of communications strategies and action plans that support the achievement of Public Health Wales’ six strategic priorities.
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be expected to support the operation of their respective teams to:
- Plan and implement communications projects
- Commission, write, edit, proof read, co-ordinate internal and external digital and print publications, public and system-facing leaflets and advice documents; write press releases, articles; and may organise print and distribution as required.
- Respond to media enquiries and brief journalists; and respond to client/agency/other stakeholder enquiries and brief clients/agencies/other stakeholders as required.
- Provide communications, marketing communications and media advice to managers, staff and committees.
Specifically the post holder in the Internal and Corporate team can expect to be responsible for the staff and manager bulletins, evaluation and update of intranet and internal social media channels, the support of a range of events including the staff conference, Annual General Meeting and regular Board and Executive meetings, and support for the stakeholder team to manage, create and distribute targeted communications.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- A degree or equivalent level in a relevant subject, or equivalent experience
Desirable criteria
- Other relevant qualifications (PR, communications, marketing, journalism)
- Relevant professional memberships (CIPR, CIM, IOIC, PRCA)
- ECDL
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience in working in a communications, or similar role.
Desirable criteria
- Experience in working in an NHS/Healthcare or Public Sector environment.
Skills
Essential criteria
- Proficiency in using standard Microsoft Office software and the internet
- Writing for the web, print, press & social media
- Effective oral and written communication of complex information in English
- Ability to organise own work effectively and work on own initiative
Desirable criteria
- Welsh language skills
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Knowledge and understanding of workings of print, broadcast and digital media
- Understanding of Welsh language standards for NHS Wales
Desirable criteria
