Applicants are invited for the post of Consultant in Spinal Rehabilitation to help develop and support existing spinal rehabilitation services in our new purpose-built unit at University Hospital Llandough (UHL).
A motivated and enthusiastic colleague is required to join the current team of five rehabilitation Consultants (across both spinal and neuro rehabilitation) and applicants should have at least two years postgraduate training in spinal rehabilitation.
Applicants must ensure they provide names and contact details of referees covering at least the last 3 years of their employment/training history in full. In addition, applicants who are currently or have most recently been employed as a substantive Consultant or as a Locum Consultant in post for more than 12 months must also provide the name of their Medical Director as an additional referee.
Main duties of the job
The Spinal Injuries Unit provides care for adults from a wide geographical area, including South and Mid Wales, and the postholder will be expected to provide medical support to the inpatients on West 8, run weekly outpatient clinics and also provide an outreach service to those patients awaiting admission to the unit.
Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services.
Academic interests will be encouraged; research and teaching in collaboration with Cardiff University’s School of Medicine will be expected.
Although this post is full-time, consideration will be given to applicants who require flexible working arrangements.
Applicants should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / CESR(CP) at the time of interview.
You will be able to take advantage of the excellent Consultant contract for Wales. The basic salary range for this post is £100,000 per annum to £146,000 per annum.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- On GMC Specialist Register for Rehabilitation Medicine / Specialty Registrar with CCT / CESR (Combined Programme) due within 6 months of interview date
- MRCP / MRCS / MRCGP / FRCP or recognised equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Academic excellence (prizes, merits, distinctions etc.)
- Higher Degree e.g. MD, PhD or equivalent
Experience
Essential criteria
- Four years full-time postgraduate training (or part-time equivalent), at least two years in spinal rehabilitation
Desirable criteria
- Ventilatory and experience of service development
Skills
Essential criteria
- Evidence of effective team and multi-disciplinary working
- Effective and demonstrable communication skills
- Up to date with current practices in spinal cord rehabilitation
- Ability to take independent clinical decisions
Clinical Governance
Essential criteria
- Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice
- Evidence of proactive engagement with appraisal and revalidation (or equivalent)
