Job overview

Applications are invited for the role of QA Vascular Surgery Lead, specifically for QA advice relating to the Vascular Society for Great Britain and Ireland standards and the QA of the three regional elective vascular networks. The post holder will be required to provide advice on individual cases and professional advice relating vascular disease and surgery. Participation with the UK Four Nations AAA Screening Group is essential.  It is expected that applicants are practicing vascular surgeons in Wales.

Main duties of the job

The role of the QA advisor will be to ensure that quality is maintained in line with the requirements of the quality policy outlined for Wales Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening Programme (WAAASP). 

This post forms part of WAAASP, which aims to reduce the incidence of morbidity and mortality from ruptured AAA in the screened population.

The post holder will provide a visible QA profile and expert advisory input into vascular surgical aspects of WAAASP.

The post holder will be professionally accountable and required to act autonomously in providing vascular surgical advice and guidance to other clinical professionals based on own specialist skills, knowledge and experience of screening and the screening programme.

The post holder will be expected to travel across Wales as it is an all Wales post.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Quality Assurance of vascular surgical elements of Wales AAA Screening Programme against agreed standards, across Wales, using information and data collected and collated for the purpose
  • Advising on professional vascular surgical standards and policy.
  • Checking and advising on agreed programme standards
  • National guidelines – advising on interpretation and implementation
  • Leading on the professional element of the QA process, including reviewing performance issues and/or complaints and actively looking for outliers and bringing quality deficiencies to the attention of the Head of Programme
  • Timely responsiveness to queries/ complaints and giving of specialist advice
  • Recommending corrective action as necessary and verifying the outcome of any action taken
  • Advising and providing feedback to colleagues on ways of improving quality
  • Encouraging the continuous professional development of colleagues
  • Participating in quality audits
  • Engagement, including attendance at meetings to be arranged by Head of Programme
  • Ensuring representation of WAAASP on national QA related committees within the UK National Screening Committee (UK NSC) and other relevant UK Groups, e.g. Four Nations Groups
