Job overview
Diabetic Eye Screening Wales (DESW) is establishing a new regional team in Newtown, Powys, as part of our Mid-Wales transformation project. This is your opportunity to be part of a dynamic team dedicated to delivering an excellent screening service, ensuring equal access to eye screening across Wales.
About the Role:
We are seeking enthusiastic and committed Healthcare Support Worker retinal screeners to join our new team. This role involves retinal screening and grading on rotation, with a primary focus on screening. We are looking for individuals who are passionate about providing high-quality care and are dedicated to continuous service improvement.

A ‘Full active UK driving licence’ is essential for this role.
Interviews are face to face. Online interviews will not be considered.
Interviews will take place on Tuesday 6th August.
Main duties of the job
Key Responsibilities:
- Guide participants through screening appointments, maintaining accurate record-keeping.
- Administer eye drops and accurately check pupil dilation within specified timeframes.
- Capture high-quality digital images of the retina using specialised cameras.
- Provide primary and secondary grading to identify diabetic retinopathy risk features.
- Adhere strictly to DESW protocols and standard operating procedures.
- Work towards attaining a retinal screening Diploma to practice independently, with full training and support provided.
Desired Skills and Experience:
- Excellent communication skills and a patient-centred approach are essential.
- Experience with SLR digital cameras is desirable; prior experience with retinal fundus cameras is advantageous.
- Flexibility to drive the Trust's Light Goods Vehicle daily to clinic venues primarily across Powys and occasionally other regions within Wales.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- GSCE (English Language and Mathematics are desirable) or HND or Level 2 NVQ (literacy and numeracy desirable) or equivalent education in relevant Healthcare subject or photography, or relevant equivalent experience.
- Commitment to continuous learning / evidence of CPD
- A good standard of general education
Desirable criteria
- Diploma in Health Screening / Retinal Grading
- Professional qualification - medical photography
Experience

- Full driving licence essential as there will be a requirement to drive a light goods vehicle daily, provided by PHW Trust.
- Flexible approach to hours of work Ability to travel throughout Wales with overnight stays

- Experience in driving Light goods vehicles (LGV)
- Welsh language speaker
