The appointee will support the AWMGS team that provides clinical genetics services to the population of South Wales.  They will be part of a wider team of medical staff, including Consultants, an Associate Specialist, a Specialist Grade, and Specialty Registrars, working closely with Genetic Counsellors, Clinical Scientists and administrative & clerical staff.

Main duties of the job

The AWMGS provides specialist genetic services to individuals and families with, or concerned about, rare genetic conditions. The service is made up of clinical and laboratory services which together provide medical genetics services to the population of Wales. Cardiff and Vale University Health Board hosts the AWMGS at the University Hospital of Wales, Singleton Hospital and Wrexham Maelor Hospital. Specialist Consultant Geneticists, Doctors and Genetic Counsellors provide genetic services in all the major hospitals throughout Wales.

Between 5,000 and 8,000 rare diseases have been identified within the UK. Each disease affects less than 0.1% of the UK's population but taken together they affect the lives of 3 million people. AWMGS provides a patient-centred specialised service focused on the provision of diagnosis and advice to promote improved clinical management and quality of life for those affected by or at risk of a genetic condition or congenital abnormality.

The All Wales Medical Genomics Service encourages personal development and the post holder will be expected to take an active part in the revalidation and appraisal processes.
