Clinical Nurse Specialist in Inherited Metabolic Diseases Band 7 (JCC / WHSSC funded)
The All Wales Adult Inherited Metabolic Disease Service has had increased funding to support service development in North Wales at Wrexham Maelor Hospital and wider BCUHB, and, to develop a network centre in Cardiff. Our vision: for all adult IMD patients in Wales to be able to access and receive high quality care wherever they live, and whether they are currently known to specialist IMD services or not. Our mission, is to deliver excellent effective care, in an efficient and sustainable manner, and be a great place to work while doing this.
We are looking for a highly motivated nurse with an interest in Metabolic Medicine to help deliver this nationally commissioned highly specialised service which provides support and care to patients in Wales with general Inherited Metabolic Disorders and Lysosomal Storage Disorders. Prior knowledge is not essential and on the job training will be provided.
The successful candidate will work closely with the Metabolic Consultants, other Specialist Nurses and the wider MDT to help manage and support patients in Wales with these rare conditions. The post holder will be expected to provide expert nursing advice and specialist support to patients, carers and professionals within the hospital and primary care setting.
A Non-medical prescribing qualification would be desirable but can be taught.
Main duties of the job
· Initial patient assessment and initiating a care plan for patients in partnership with the wider multidisciplinary team (MDT)
· Supporting patients whilst undergoing diagnostic tests
· Providing patients, families and staff with expertise (in-depth knowledge and understanding of general Inherited Metabolic Disorders and Lysosomal Storage Disorders)
· Liaise with metabolic laboratory to facilitate specific biochemistry and sample handling
· Initiating and implementing standards of nursing treatment and care for IMD patients
· Competent in the medication administration. Initiate drug therapy and medication, practicing as an independent prescriber within scope of practice.
· Providing nurse-led clinics
· Service development
· Undertake strategic planning to this expanding service, and delivering disease-awareness education, to incorporate specific speciality needs and evidence-based practice
Other duties:
· Liaise with community-based agencies and homecare providers to provide community support and specialist care.
· Actively involved in clinical trials, be a point of contact to facilitate recruitment of patients from across Wales into appropriate trials in conjunction with the clinical trials team.
· Ensure high quality data is correctly recorded
· Network locally and nationally to ensure best practice
