Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic, well-motivated nurse to join the Sapphire Epilepsy Adult Specialist Nurse to support patients their families and carers to live well with their condition.

They will assess patients, plan and implement care, provide specialist advice and maintain associated records for people with Epilepsy. The post-holder will work collaboratively with other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure that the health care needs of these individuals are met.

They will work autonomously in patients’ homes, primary care premises and hospitals to co-ordinate the care needs of the patients on the caseload.

They will have good communication skills and support and encourage patient/carer interventions and education.  

They will provide expert support, advice, and an educational resource to other members of the nursing team and other disciplines as required.  

Main duties of the job

Manage, co-ordinate, facilitate and develop evaluation strategies for the implementation and delivery of Epilepsy services in Hywel Dda, in collaboration with primary care teams, secondary care teams and other relevant organisations. 

Implement evidence-based protocols of care to ensure appropriate diagnosis, investigation and treatment of patients with Epilepsy Implement evidence-based protocols to enable the initiation, adjustment, and monitoring of therapy in line with supplementary/independent prescribing.

Identify opportunities for improvement in Epilepsy services and collaborate between Primary, Community and Secondary care interface to plan the implemented change.

Implement agreed patient care pathways in relation to Epilepsy including the use of technologies e.g., telemedicine, telehealth.

Have the responsibility and expertise to champion and empower others by initiating, sharing and evaluation of best practice.

Prepare and implement Epilepsy clinic protocols across Hywel Dda.

Act as an expert resource and advisor to individuals and colleagues on issues relating to prevention and treatment of Epilepsy.

Work as an autonomous practitioner.

To develop own competence and complete competencies relevant to this post.

Highly specialised and tertiary services commissioned by the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee, a joint committee representing seven health boards across Wales.

Qualifications & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse
  • Part 1 of NMC register
  • Holder of a degree or equivalent qualification or experience
  • Postgraduate diploma in area of expertise or expert knowledge in the field of neurology
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching qualification
  • Recognised epilepsy course
  • Expert knowledge in the field of epilepsy care and demonstrable practice
  • Neurosciences Nursing Module course
  • Research and audit knowledge
  • Awareness of clinical governance

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Post registration experience of working within Learning Disability services
  • Evidence of ongoing/recent post registration development
  • Experience of teaching and assessing in the clinical area
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of Project planning
  • Experience of working across primary, community and secondary care
  • Post registration experience of working in epilepsy care
