Job overview

Hywel Dda University Health Board's Library & Knowledge Services Department are dynamic and forward-thinking and are currently seeking an experienced, enthusiastic and innovative librarian to join the teams based in Carmarthen.

Our library services play a crucial role in supporting healthcare professionals,  students and researchers. As a hospital based librarian, you’ll contribute to patient care, education, training, evidence-based practice and research needs. 

The role involves overseeing facilities, managing the library space, promoting the work of the library, as well as providing training to support the acquirement of information and knowledge including; training on research skills, citation tools, digital resources and database usage, tailoring sessions to different audiences. 

The post holder will support and work closely with other librarians from across the other Health Board sites and will forge close links with University partners and other external stakeholders. 

Main duties of the job

  • You’ll manage and inspire teams, helping them understand the impact they make on frontline staff and patients
  • Support the strategic vision of the Library and Knowledge Services Department across the Health Board
  • Manage the hospital library, including physical and digital resources
  • Provide research assistance to clinicians, nurses, and other staff
  • Curate relevant medical literature and resources
  • Collaborate with departments to enhance knowledge sharing
  • Develop and deliver training sessions 
  • Stay updated on healthcare trends and emerging technologies

Working for our organisation

Hywel Dda University Health Board is the planner and provider of NHS healthcare services for people in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and its bordering counties. Our 12,000 members of staff provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services for around 384,000 people across a quarter of the landmass of Wales. We do this in partnership with our three local authorities and public, private and third sector colleagues, including our volunteers, through:

Four main hospitals: Bronglais General in Aberystwyth, Glangwili General in Carmarthen, Prince Philip in Llanelli and Withybush General in Haverfordwest;

Seven community hospitals: Amman Valley and Llandovery in Carmarthenshire; Tregaron, Aberaeron and Cardigan in Ceredigion; and Tenby and South Pembrokeshire Hospital Health and Social Care Resource Centre in Pembrokeshire;

47 general practices (6 of which are managed practices), 45 dental practices (including 4 orthodontic), 96 community pharmacies, 44 general ophthalmic practices (43 providing Eye Health Examination Wales and 34 low vision services) and 17 domiciliary only providers and 11 health centres;

Numerous locations providing mental health and learning disabilities services;

Highly specialised and tertiary services commissioned by the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee, a joint committee representing seven health boards across Wales.

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • First degree or postgraduate degree level qualification in Librarianship, Information Management, Information Science
  • Chartered Librarian or equivalent experience such as: Completion of an academic program accredited by CILIP, or practical experience in a library and/or information settings. This could involve working in libraries, archives, or related roles.
  • Experience of working in a library or previous management experience in a related area
  • Knowledge of Library/Information Management systems
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation; copyright, data protection
Desirable criteria
  • Member of CILIP or FEDIP
  • Formal or Professional qualification in IT or Teaching
  • Knowledge and understanding of the healthcare environment
  • An understanding of current information/library developments

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Proven track record of managing a library, information service or related environment, including managing staff and budgets
  • Experience of managing, promoting, and using electronic resources
  • Evidence of contribution to improving quality
  • Experience of planning and implementing service developments
  • Experience of literature searching using a variety of bibliographic/citation databases
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a health library environment
  • Experience of e-resources management
  • Budgetry/ procurement experience
  • Ability to market and publicise events
  • Experience of delivering information and/or digital literacy skills training and/or critical appraisal skills training
  • Using generative AI (Artificial Intelligence) research tools
