Job overview

This is a new post and you will join colleagues in a very dynamic and forward looking Ophthalmology Department working alongside Ophthalmology Consultants and Management Team in the development of a comprehensive Ophthalmology service across Health Board based at Glangwili Hospital, Carmarthenshire. 

The post will be based at Glangwili General Hospital in Carmarthenshire. An agreed job plan will be discussed and agreed with the successful candidate.  Some job plans may contain clinics on other hospital sites, but this will be discussed with the successful candidate.

The successful candidate will work in close conjunction with other consultant physicians in the hospital and the community; the distribution of these posts is as follows: 

Short term objectives:

To develop a sub-specialty service within HDUHB ensuring a pathway for new and follow up patients is developed in line with demand and capacity planning

To develop delivery of a sub-specialty theatre services within HDUHB that will encompass theatre delivery for your chosen sub-specialty procedures

To support the development of Junior staff with a specialist interest in your chosen sub-specialty

To support the multi-disciplinary team with a specialist interest in your chosen sub-specialty

To ensure all processes and procedures are established in line with NICE guidance

Main duties of the job

To provide effective leadership to all staff engaged in the specialty

Development and delivery of sub-specialty service within the HB

Triage of referrals into Ophthalmology service

Delivery of specialist clinics

Delivery of specialist theatre

Involvement in the delivery of cataract services

Oversight and support for emergency eye casualty out of hours

To participate in the on call rota 1:6

To participate in Ophthalmology service development and delivery

To attend all relevant departmental meetings

To participate in the clinical governance activities within the service

Working for our organisation

Hywel Dda University Health Board is the planner and provider of NHS healthcare services for people in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and its bordering counties. Our 12,000 members of staff provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services for around 384,000 people across a quarter of the landmass of Wales. Numerous locations providing mental health and learning disabilities services;

Highly specialised and tertiary services commissioned by the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee, a joint committee representing seven health boards across Wales.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
  • On Specialist Register with GMC or CCT due within 6 months of interview date
  • FRCOphth or equivalent
  • Specialist training in ophthalmology subspecialty (to be agreed)
  • Valid Certified Advanced Life Support Skills
Desirable criteria
  • Appropriate Higher Degree e.g. MD, PhD or MSc or equivalent

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Broad based experience in Ophthalmology
  • Knowledge of UK hospital systems (or equivalent)
  • Knowledge and participation in CPD
  • Competence in cataract surgery
  • Able to apply knowledge
  • Safe and effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge and experience of communicating bad news
  • Meet the requirement of the GMC’s “Good Medical Practice”
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of NHS
  • Wider experience, research and training in providing sub specialty service
  • Evidence of above average performance
  • Additional clinical and research qualification(s)

Clinical Governance

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice
  • Comprehension of core philosophy and building blocks of Clinical Governance
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of risk management
  • Knowledge of annual job planning/appraisal review process

Research

Essential criteria
  • Experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence so as to improve clinical outcomes
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of initiating, progressing and concluding research projects with publication
  • Research degree

Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of organising programmes and teaching medical students and junior doctors
  • Willingness to teach all grades of professional multidisciplinary staff
Desirable criteria
  • Organisation of further teaching programmes in medical education
  • “Training the Trainers” experience

Management

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of the management and structure of the NHS
  • Willingness to participate in clinical management
