Consultant Rheumatologist

We are looking to recruit an ambitious doctor who will join our enthusiastic team and invite applications from candidates with a passion to deliver an outstanding service to our rheumatology patients across the Health Board.

As a senior employee of the Health Board, the post holder will work in close co-operation with, and support other clinical, medical professional and managerial colleagues in providing high quality healthcare to the Health Board’s patients.

Any applicant who is unable, for personal reasons, to work the hours requested will be considered for the post.  If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis in consultation with Consultant colleagues.

Main duties of the job

The post is pivotal to the continued development and quality of Rheumatology services provided by the Health Board and will support the existing Consultants.

This appointment will provide care to patients from across the Health Board Health Board. The principal place of employment being Prince Philip Hospital, although other working locations including off site working may be necessary and will form part of your agreed job plan.  This will be subject to change as the Health Board’s clinical requirements are amended to meet the needs of the service/patients.

Other hospitals at which duties are performed: In view of the fact that the organisation is currently undertaking a review of its services and the locations at which they are undertaken, it is important to be aware that work patterns may change and the place(s) of duties modified. The Clinical Strategy of the Health Board is under constant development and the job holder may be required to undertake different duties agreed at the time of appointment

Hywel Dda University Health Board is the planner and provider of NHS healthcare services for people in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and its bordering counties. Our 12,000 members of staff provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services for around 384,000 people across a quarter of the landmass of Wales. We do this in partnership with our three local authorities and public, private and third sector colleagues, including our volunteers, through:

Four main hospitals: Bronglais General in Aberystwyth, Glangwili General in Carmarthen, Prince Philip in Llanelli and Withybush General in Haverfordwest;

Seven community hospitals: Amman Valley and Llandovery in Carmarthenshire; Tregaron, Aberaeron and Cardigan in Ceredigion; and Tenby and South Pembrokeshire Hospital Health and Social Care Resource Centre in Pembrokeshire;

47 general practices (6 of which are managed practices), 45 dental practices (including 4 orthodontic), 96 community pharmacies, 44 general ophthalmic practices (43 providing Eye Health Examination Wales and 34 low vision services) and 17 domiciliary only providers and 11 health centres;

Numerous locations providing mental health and learning disabilities services;

Highly specialised and tertiary services commissioned by the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee, a joint committee representing seven health boards across Wales.

This Consultant in Rheumatology post will have clinical commitment and responsibility for the development of the Rheumatology service in Prince Philip Hospital, Llanelli, as well as the department in totality.

This post will be joining 1 full time Consultant (currently vacant), 1 full time Locum Consultant based in Pembrokeshire, 1 full time Consultant based in Ceredigion and 2 full time Consultants based in Carmarthenshire.  The Pembrokeshire Nursing team consists of 0.4 WTE Specialist Nurse Prescriber Band 7 and 1.0 WTE Specialist Nurse Band 6.  The Carmarthenshire Nursing team consists of 1.0 WTE Specialist Nurse Band 7, 1.0 WTE Specialist Nurse Band 6 and 1.0 WTE Specialist Nurse Band 5.  We have an Advanced Pharmacist based within Carmarthenshire and are actively looking to recruit in to a second post.  A team to support the Consultant post at BGH is currently in development.

The successful candidate for this Consultant post will be eligible to hold an Honorary Academic title at a partner university on the understanding that they will participate in undergraduate teaching, including acting as an examiner, and support and facilitate research activities in an appropriate university faculty and school. They will take direction in these activities via the appropriate academic lead. The agreement to define the Honorary Academic responsibilities and associated programmed activities in relation to teaching time and research will be negotiated jointly between the post holder, the university and the Health Board. It will form part of the successful candidate’s job plan. The award of the Honorary Academic contract will be dependent upon a formal application being submitted to the university in accordance with the Honorary Appointments procedures and will be available on a fixed term basis subject to satisfactory performance in the academic activity undertaken

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
  • On Specialist Register with GMC or CCT due ) within 6 months of interview date
  • Or CESR or equivalent European Qualifications for Specialist Registration
  • MRCP or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Appropriate Higher Degree e.g. MD, PhD or MSc or equivalent
  • On Specialist Register

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Broad based experience in Rheumatology
  • Knowledge of UK hospital systems (or equivalent)
  • Knowledge and participation in CPD
  • Competence in Rheumatology
  • Expertise in Rheumatology
  • Able to apply knowledge
  • Safe and effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge and experience of communicating bad news
  • Meet the requirement of the GMC’s “Good Medical Practice”
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of NHS
  • Wider experience, research and training in providing sub specialty service
  • Evidence of above average performance
  • Additional clinical qualification(s)

Clinical Governance

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice
  • Comprehension of core philosophy and building blocks of Clinical Governance
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of risk management
  • Knowledge of annual job planning/appraisal review process

Research

Essential criteria
  • Experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence so as to improve clinical outcomes

Teaching

  • Evidence of organising programmes and teaching medical students and junior doctors
