Job overview

We have an exciting development in West Wales.  

We are looking for two individuals to work in our Learning Disabilities Service at band 7. One post holder will be based at Llanion House in Pembroke Dock, and the other will be based at 1 Penlan Road in Carmarthen.

We have a team of people with learning disabilities who co-chair our Regional Partnership Group and help to lead our services. They have developed a Charter which highlights their rights and which Organisations and staff groups can sign up to. The Psychology & Behaviour Service believes in putting people with learning disabilities at the centre of everything we do. We strongly believe in Human Rights and advocating for people with a learning disability.  Without Psychologists how will people with a learning disability be able to participate and speak up?

Main duties of the job

To provide a qualified specialist psychology service to clients of the locality across all sectors of care.

To provide specialist psychological assessment and therapy to clients and their families, and to offer advice and consultation on clients’ psychological care to colleagues within the team and to those within relevant outside agencies.

To provide input into specialist services if required.

To work autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of Learning Disabilities policies and procedures. This will involve being clinically responsible for complex therapeutic and risk management work with clients.

To utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research within the area served by the locality team.

Working for our organisation

Hywel Dda University Health Board is the planner and provider of NHS healthcare services for people in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and its bordering counties. Our 12,000 members of staff provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services for around 384,000 people across a quarter of the landmass of Wales. We do this in partnership with our three local authorities and public, private and third sector colleagues, including our volunteers, through:

Four main hospitals: Bronglais General in Aberystwyth, Glangwili General in Carmarthen, Prince Philip in Llanelli and Withybush General in Haverfordwest;

Seven community hospitals: Amman Valley and Llandovery in Carmarthenshire; Tregaron, Aberaeron and Cardigan in Ceredigion; and Tenby and South Pembrokeshire Hospital Health and Social Care Resource Centre in Pembrokeshire;

47 general practices (6 of which are managed practices), 45 dental practices (including 4 orthodontic), 96 community pharmacies, 44 general ophthalmic practices (43 providing Eye Health Examination Wales and 34 low vision services) and 17 domiciliary only providers and 11 health centres;

Numerous locations providing mental health and learning disabilities services;

Highly specialised and tertiary services commissioned by the Welsh Health Specialised Services Committee, a joint committee representing seven health boards across Wales

Qualifications and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Registration with the HCPC as a Practitioner Psychologist.
  • Doctoral level training in clinical psychology, including psychopathology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the BPS.
  • Good working knowledge and application of Psychometrics and cognitive assessments, appropriate administration and limitations.
  • Knowledge and experience of the application of psychology across the developmental lifespan and experience of working in core specialties of adult mental health, child and adolescent, older adults and learning disabilities demonstrating knowledge of cognition, behavioural psychology and other models and approaches.
  • Knowledge of models of psychology including cognition, behavioural psychology and systemic approaches
  • Doctoral knowledge of research
Desirable criteria
  • Training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in-patient settings.
  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment incorporating psychometrics and cognitive assessment
  • Experience of working with people with learning disabilities.
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course, presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of teaching, training and supervision.
  • Experience of the application of psychology in different cultural contexts.
