Job overview

Working Full Time: 37.5 Hours Per Week

An opportunity for you to engage in the provision of technical audiological services with limited supervision. The post holder will 
perform a broad range of work activities, which are primarily routine or predictable, involving hearing assessments and hearing rehabilitation.

The job is to include predominantly the care of adult patients with 
hearing loss and some older paediatric (> 5 years of age) patients. This requires formulating individualised care plans for adults diagnosed with a hearing loss, working within in/out patients, acute and community 
Audiology, and with housebound patients during domiciliary visits. 

Main duties of the job

  1. To verify hearing aid fitting using highly skilled real ear measurements. This involves the insertion of probe tubes deep into the patient's ear canal to within 3mm of the eardrum. This will require effective communication with and the co-operation of the patient and fine dexterity skills.
  2.  Instruct and guide the patient in operation and maintenance of the hearing aid, adapting the instructions and approach to accommodate the patients' communication and physical difficulties.
  3.  Provide patient specific counselling with regard to management of their hearing loss.
  4. Fine dexterity - evaluate the fit of earmoulds and modify as necessary using a hand precision lathe and/or drill.
  5. Decontaminate earmoulds in accordance with departmental infection control policies.
  6. To perform hearing aid repair and maintenance when required.

Working for our organisation

The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides services to West Cheshire and to Welsh patients covered by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The Trust works collaboratively within the wider Cheshire and Merseyside Health and Care Partnership. Its services are provided from three locations:

  • The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 438 general and acute beds
  • Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 56 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate and outpatient facility
  • Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.                                                                 

The Trust employs over 6258 staff (headcount) which includes temporary bank staff and provides acute emergency and elective services, primary care direct access services and obstetric services to a population of approximately 407,000. This includes 357,000 residents in Chester and West Cheshire which includes Ellesmere Port and Neston as well as the Deeside area of Flintshire which has a population of approximately 50,000.

The Trust is a busy district general hospital and in 2022/2023, there were more than 503,342 patient attendances (inpatient, outpatient and diagnostic) ranging from a simple outpatient appointment to major cancer surgery. This is an increase of nearly 10,000 compared to the previous year when there were 494,387 patient attendances.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc Audiology or equivalent BAAT I and II (applications will be considered for candidates currently undertaking their final year BSc Audiology and working towards completion and AHCS registration)
  • Successful completion of CCC clinical training qualification
  • Applications will be considered for candidates currently undertaking their final year BSc Audiology and working towards completion and AHCS registration
Desirable criteria
  • Registration with AHCS
  • Up-to-date CPD portfolio

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of all standard audiological test procedures.
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant professional policies and procedures
  • Experience of working in a NHS Audiology department.
  • Experience in both adult & some paediatric testing in both diagnostic & rehabilitative areas.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of advanced audiological test procedures.
  • Knowledge of wide range of NHS amplification options, including digital hearing aids, CROS aids and BAHA.
  • Experience of audit and service improvement
