Join our team and embark on an exciting career journey as a Consultant Radiologist at The Countess of Chester Hospital.

The Radiology Directorate is part of the Diagnostic and Clinical Support Services Division. The directorate provides a diagnostic imaging service to inpatients and outpatient services across two sites: Countess of Chester Hospital and Ellesmere Port Hospital. In addition, the department provides a GP direct access service for plain film, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, CT, and MRI. The Trust is also the South of Mersey Vascular centre (SMart Centre) providing a networked vascular service for Chester, Warrington and Wirral patients.

The Countess of Chester Hospital has consistently invested within the Radiology department and has ensured that the environment and the equipment meet the needs of a modern, changing diagnostic service. Our latest developments being, our replacement Interventional Radiology suite with built in floor space for future expansion and our new state of the art cardiac CT scanner.

 The Countess of Chester site has 3 CT scanners (1 cardiac scanner) and 2 1.5T MRI scanners. The department has a suite of ultrasound scanners. The general department is fully digital, including wireless portable equipment. The department performs approximately 15,500 MRI scans, 30,000 CT scans, 2,000 Interventional procedures and 31,000 ultrasound scans per year. 

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be expected to integrate into the team of existing Consultants to provide a complete diagnostic service including the reporting of CT, MRI, ultrasound and plain films.

 The post-holder will be expected to have, or to develop sub-specialist skills to complement the rest of the team. Specific interest in Paediatrics, MSK or Cardiac radiology is encouraged; however, not essential.

This is a full-time position but candidates wishing to work part-time or in a job share are encouraged to apply. If a part-time or job share person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed with the appointee on a personal basis to meet the needs of the service.

Working for our organisation

The Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provides services to West Cheshire and to Welsh patients covered by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. The Trust works collaboratively within the wider Cheshire and Merseyside Health and Care Partnership. Its services are provided from three locations:

•    The Countess of Chester Hospital: providing 438 general and acute beds.
•    Ellesmere Port Hospital: providing 56 beds as a rehabilitation, intermediate and outpatient facility.
•    Tarporley War Memorial Hospital: a base for community services which serve the local rural population.

The Trust employs over 6258 staff (headcount) which includes temporary bank staff and provides acute emergency and elective services, primary care direct access services and obstetric services to a population of approximately 407,000. This includes 357,000 residents in Chester and West Cheshire which includes Ellesmere Port and Neston as well as the Deeside area of Flintshire which has a population of approximately 50,000.

The Trust is a busy district general hospital and in 2022/2023, there were more than 503,342 patient attendances (inpatient, outpatient and diagnostic) ranging from a simple outpatient appointment to major cancer surgery. This is an increase of nearly 10,000 compared to the previous year when there were 494,387 patient attendances.

Please note applicants will be required to pay for their DBS check. Costs are deducted from salary following appointment. The cost of the DBS application is £27.50 (standard) or £55.50 (enhanced), this cost will be deducted from your salary over the first three months of employment.

You are encouraged to enrol for the DBS Update Service. A small annual fee of £16 per year applies.

New entrants to the NHS will commence on the minimum of the scale stated above.
