Job overview

Each Cheshire NHS Trust require a dynamic and forward-thinking Specialty Doctor to join the Gastroenterology team. This post will be based at the Macclesfield District General Hospital site: one of two acute sites operated by the Trust, with the other being Congleton War Memorial Hospital. 

The post is a 10 PA appointment, with the post-holder expected to undertake 6 endoscopy sessions and 2 clinics each week, while participating in in-patient ward work reviewing acute Gastroenterology admissions. 

Prime responsibilities:

  • To undertake high quality diagnostic and therapeutic upper and lower GI endoscopy
  • To participate in the provision of a high quality out-patient Gastroenterology service, including patient administration
  • To manage Gastroenterology in-patients

 Key tasks:

  • Active participation in the management and development of the specialty and the introduction of new services
  • Participation in Multidisciplinary Team Meetings
  • Participation in MDT’s as appropriate
  • Participation in medical audit
  • Participation in the Trust appraisal process
  • Comply with the requirements for Continuing Professional Development and revalidation as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians. The trust is committed to providing the time and financial support for these activities.

Main duties of the job

The role of Specialty Doctor will include the following:

·           Support acute assessment and intermediate care wards as required by in reach

·           Looking after inpatients in the gastroenterology ward

·           Participate in audit programmes, maintaining robust systems for effective clinical audit

·           Carry out endoscopy sessions

·           Assist with service development

·           Attend unit management and governance meetings

·           Work with colleagues to ensure effective management of inpatients, internal referrals,     outpatient clinics and investigational sessions

 

·           Participate in the education and training of medical students, doctors, and professions  allied to medicine including those in primary care

 

This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced doctor to take on a leadership role within an established gastroenterology team, and to carry out endoscopy sessions four times per week.

NHS Medical and Dental salaries are set at a national level.  For new starters not already working to UK Medical and Dental terms and conditions of service will be appointed to the minimum paypoint.  The starting salary paypoint can only be increased when there is evidence of relevant, completed years’ experience in terms of nature, type and level of role.  The evidence required to increase a starting salary would be Payslips and details noted in the application form i.e. complete employment history

Professional Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Medical degree MRCP or equivalent
  • Applicants must hold full GMC registration
Desirable criteria
  • Any additional postgraduate examination

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current license to practice from, the GMC at intended start date.
  • Have evidence of achievement of foundation competences from a UKFPO affiliated Foundation Programme or equivalent any time of appointment in line with the GMC standards/Good Medical Practice
  • Appropriate level of clinical knowledge
  • Knowledge and application of up to date evidenced based practice
  • Experience in the management of patients within the Medical Division
  • Understanding of clinical risk management
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of experience in specialties outside of specialist interest

Communication & Language Skills

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English, adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues. This can be assessed by IELTS examination or equivalent.
  • Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels
  • Ability to work constructively in a team environment
