Job overview

**This position is open to staff working at the Trust in the ‘ECT Family’ this includes current East Cheshire NHS Trust employees, bank staff, ISS staff and volunteers at the Trust.** 

To work as a member of the orthopaedic team demonstrating expertise in casting and plastering techniques.  To provide technical and professional support in other clinical areas within the Trust.  The post holder will be responsible for the provision of a high standard of care including undertaking specialist casting and splinting procedures.  The post holder will work unsupervised using their own initiative and make appropriate clinical decisions. The post holder would be expected to test new products and equipment and report findings.  The post holder will be the lead specialist for the trust in casting.

To design, implement and maintain a training competency programme for all staff in the trust including Doctors in the application of casts as required in accordance with BOA/BCC guidelines. 

Hours per week: 22.5

Main duties of the job

·   To be competent in the application, adjustment and removal of all types of casts as prescribed by a clinician.

 ·    To provide expert specialist technical support and advice and a casting service for the Trust as and when needed – eg Theatre, Wards. 

 ·   To provide advice on the application of casts for specialist conditions ie total contact casting and its wound care for diabetic patients and hip spicas for paediatric patients. 

  ·   Demonstrate a working knowledge of the use of research in assisting with the development of clinical standards and protocols for casting and splintage.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Certified Orthopaedic Technician
  • Hold British Orthopaedic Association certificate or British Casting Certificate
  • Ongoing personal / professional development
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching qualification
  • NVQ III in relevant subject

Knowledge & Skills

Essential criteria
  • Effective communicator, able to provide and receive complex, sensitive information where there may be barriers to communication and understanding
  • Able to work without supervision and use own initiative.
  • Able to make appropriate clinical decisions referring patients for onward management as necessary.
  • Sound clinical skills (wound care, removal of stitches, clips or K-wires) •
  • Organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workload
  • Ability to work under pressure with frequent interruptions
Desirable criteria
  • Wound management
  • Knowledge of developing standard for casting and splintage

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience working as a plaster technician / orthopaedic technician or within a casting / splintage clinical area
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience in teaching / training
