Job overview

**This position is open to staff working at the Trust in the ‘ECT Family’ this includes current East Cheshire NHS Trust employees, both NHSP and ECT bank staff, ISS staff and volunteers at the Trust. Unfortunately, we cannot accept applications from applicants not listed within these groups.**

Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant Paediatrician to join the Paediatric Team at Macclesfield District General Hospital.

The Paediatric service is run by a highly motivated team that provides a fully integrated acute and community Paediatric service with a dedicated Children’s Ward, Paediatrics Outpatient Department and Neonatal Unit.

The successful candidate will join a team of 7 Acute Paediatric Consultants. We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated general paediatrician to join our team to cover parental leave. The existing team have a variety of specialisms and applicants with a special interest in  nephrology  would complement the specialisms already held within the department, however,  all special interests will be considered. The role holder will contribute to the general paediatric clinical work including a 1 in 7 emergency cover rota. We have full middle-grade and SHO tiers  and a team of specialist nurses.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be expected to work flexibly to deliver high quality care with particular emphasis on:

  • Optimising use of all resources allocated to the post to develop appropriate services and techniques required to meet clinical needs
  • Work together with colleagues to ensure effective management of cross-specialty referrals, in-patients, and outpatient clinic programmed activities
  • Adapt, assimilate and integrate best practice from elsewhere to continuously improve care
  • Develop and maintain robust systems to ensure effective clinical audit in the specialty as appropriate, inclusive of undertaking personal audit
  • Further develop services as indicated by department needs and work with colleagues to identify additional resources needed to develop the service
  • Clinical assessment, resuscitation and timely onward referral, admission or discharge of all types of patients attending the department. It is expected that Consultants will lead the department during rostered sessions, maintaining situational awareness and redeploying staff to address resource-demand mismatches.

NHS Medical and Dental salaries are set at a national level.  For new starters not already working to UK Medical and Dental terms and conditions of service will be appointed to the minimum paypoint.  The starting salary paypoint can only be increased when there is evidence of relevant, completed year’s experience in terms of nature, type and level of role.  The evidence required to increase a starting salary would be Payslips and details noted in the application form i.e. complete employment history

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification recognised by the General Medical Council

Clinical Skills

Essential criteria
  • Experience in working independently during ‘out of normal working hours’, relevant to the job.
  • Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge relevant to the job.
  • Experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk. Knows when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need.
  • Shows aptitude for practical skills, required in the job.
Desirable criteria
  • Expertise in cardiology: Able to run independent cardiology clinics, perform echocardiography and interpret 12 lead and 24 hour ECGs and memo recordings
