Paediatric Specialist Dietitian

Job overview

We are looking for an innovative and enthusiastic Dietitian to join our service to help shape our continuously growing and evolving team. You will be supported to manage a general paediatric caseload with exposure to regular clinics and ward work, under the supervision of a Highly Specialist Band 7 Dietitians. You will also get the opportunity to gain experience in other specialist areas, such as Diabetes, complex feeding difficulties and tube feeding and Neonates as your skills progress.

Main duties of the job

 

  1. To provide specialist dietary advice to children and their families, in the outpatient/clinic and ward settings.
  2. To play an active role in wider training of school staff, nursery staff and ward staff on relevant topics
  3. To support patients and families during the transition from paediatric services through to young adult services
  4. To contribute to MDT meetings and service development projects where appropriate
  5. Working within the dietetic team; to be an educator in diet; providing up-to-date dietary information and training for health professionals, medical and non-medical staff, and students, to help improve evidence based and best practice
  6. To educate children and their parents/ carers e.g. regarding the use of specialist feeding equipment, adjustment of feeding regimens, carbohydrate counting etc
  7. To plan and provide clinical support and competency training for junior dietitians/dietetic assistants/specialist therapy assistants. To undertake the role of an assessor in evaluating and checking competencies of student dietitians. To be actively involved in their training plan.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  1. Managing a varied caseload of general paediatric patients in an outpatient setting 
  2. Seeing inpatients on the ward
  3. Delivering education to newly diagnosed type 1 diabetic patients on the ward
  4. opportunities to gain experience within specialist roles such as home enteral feeding (HEF) and Neonatal under the supervision of a band 7 Dietitian 
  5. Supervision of students and band band 3/4 team members 
  6. involvement in audit and service development 
  7. Delivering education to other health professionals e.g. training to ward staff, health visitors etc

Clinical experience

Essential criteria
  • are you a HCPC registered Dietitian?
  • previous experience working as a band 5 Dietitian
  • Up-to-date clinical knowledge of the nutritional management of a wide variety of clinical conditions based on current best practice
  • Able to prioritise and manage own workload to achieve deadlines
  • experience plotting and interpreting paediatric growth charts
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience as a paediatric Dietitian
  • Post-graduate qualification in paediatrics
  • Experience with the range of clinical conditions that may be found in general paediatric clinic such as cows milk protein allergy, nutritional support, weight management, coeliac disease etc
  • Attendance of BDA Modular Courses for Paediatric Dietitians
  • Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit
  • Supervisory and / or mentorship skills

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • band 5 dietetic experience
  • postgraduate CPD
Desirable criteria
  • completed BDA Paediatric modules
