Specialist Physiotherapist Acute Medical Therapy Team

NHS AfC: Band 6

Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic experienced Band 5 or existing Band 6 Physiotherapist Therapist to work within the Acute Medical Therapy Team at Warrington & Halton Hospitals.

We are looking for a talented individual who is committed to working as part of our Therapy Team delivering an excellent, caring service to patients across our inpatient bed base. Our ideal candidate must be confident, enjoy working as a part of a large multi-disciplinary team and be able to demonstrate a desire to actively participate in all aspects of this specialist role. Support for this role and development will be provided by senior staff who are committed to supporting and valuing staff working within the team.

Main duties of the job

The successful post holder will join our friendly and supportive team of Physio and OT staff to work across the acute medical inpatient bed base, working in a wide variety of specialities including Frailty, Cardiology and General Medicine. The successful post holder will demonstrate specialist clinical skills and knowledge to support the provision of assessments, therapeutic interventions and discharge planning. Our philosophy is a “Home First” approach, with an emphasis on supporting patient’s personal choices, strengths, and inclusion in every stage of their care. We adopt an early mobilisation approach which aims to reduce acquired hospital deconditioning whilst enabling a person to maintain as much of their independence as possible. The candidate will work closely with the multi-disciplinary team and community partners to ensure safe, effective discharges with the aim of preventing hospital re-admissions and deconditioning.

The post holder will participate in the weekend working rota which is currently Saturdays only. The post holder will also be expected, on completion of relevant competencies, to participate in the Respiratory on call rota.

Working for our organisation

Warrington and Halton Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a caring and compassionate organisation that is both ambitious and innovative. We are committed to delivering the best outcomes for our patients and providing a positive experience of our staff.  We aspire to be outstanding for our patients, our communities and our staff and are committed to being a great place to receive healthcare, work and learn.

Straddling the neighbouring boroughs of Warrington and Halton we are part of the Cheshire and Merseyside Integrated Care system.  Our hospitals are ideally situated to meet the growing healthcare needs of the 330,000 population of these boroughs.

Warrington Hospital is home to our emergency, critical care and maternity services, Halton Hospital is focused on elective procedures and the Runcorn Urgent Treatment Centre, although many services are offered at both sites and in community hubs.

A CQC-rated ‘good’ organisation with ‘outstanding’ features, we are working towards university hospital status, having achieved teaching hospital status in 2019.

Our workforce of nearly 5,000 across both sites comprises more than 50 nationalities. We strive to be an equal, diverse and inclusive employer, which is recognised as a pioneer in its equality, diversity and inclusion work. The Trust is proud to have achieved numerous external accreditations and is working towards achieving the Anti-Racist Organisation Framework, recognising the importance of anti-racism in all that we do.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will appropriately assess and treat individuals using an integrated approach to formulate an effective discharge plan and positive patient journey throughout admission. The therapist will be required to manage a caseload alongside Occupational Therapy colleagues on the acute wards, including some complex patients. The post holder will demonstrate specialist therapy skills in the clinical area of Frailty, Dementia, Cardiology and Acute Medicine supporting the ‘Home First’ philosophy. There will be opportunities to rotate within the acute wards, covering a significant portion of the hospital, to support continued professional development.

As a specialist therapist, you will be responsible for the clinical supervision of students and junior staff and will be supported by senior members of the team. You will participate in service improvement projects, audits, in-service training and work collaboratively with community colleagues to facilitate timely and safe discharges, with a key focus on preventing hospital acquired deconditioning. The post holder will also be expected, on completion of relevant competencies, to participate in the Respiratory on call rota.
