UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL STATUS

There are strong links with the Universities of Newcastle and Durham.  The Southern Campus for the University of Durham Medical Schools pre-clinical teaching programme is now located locally in a purpose built campus at Stockton-on-Tees. Since 2002 the Trust has been a University Hospital, teaching and training both pre-clinical and clinical medical undergraduates on site. The Trust has evolved from being a District General Hospital into a fully-fledged teaching centre and is attracting substantial extra resource to provide for teaching and research facilities. A new clinical sciences research facility will be constructed on the James Cook Hospital site in the near future.

There are now 15 clinical professorial posts across the Trust with chairs at the Universities of Durham and Teesside. It is expected that many consultants will soon achieve Clinical Lecturer status in the University of Durham in recognition of their input into undergraduate medical education.
