Job overview

We are looking to appoint a dynamic and innovative full time Consultant to support delivery of the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery services across the Tees Valley.

This post is a full-time post to replace a consultant with previous Head & Neck experience. The candidate should have a broad experience in General Maxillofacial Surgery including Head & Neck, Facial Trauma, Orthognathic, TMJ, Skin and Dentoalveolar Surgery.

The post will be based at James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, providing an exciting opportunity to work within a committed team. Service provision extends to The Friarage Hospital (Northallerton) and Darlington Memorial Hospital. The Consultant workforce, at JCUH, is supported by an Associate Specialist (POMFS), 2 Specialist Registrars in training, 3 full time Specialty Doctors, 4 part time Specialty Doctors and 7 Dental Core Trainees. Also supporting the team is our Oral Surgery Consultant and our Restorative Dentsitry Consultant. 

Main duties of the job

The department has a fully functioning Maxillofacial laboratory which is equipped with up-to-date technology. The laboratory has intra & extra oral scanning facilities. It is equipped with 3D printers and 3D software for planning and image manipulation.

James Cook University Hospital is a designated Major Trauma Centre and OMFS are part of the trauma MDT. The successful candidate will be part of the on‑call rota for Oral & Maxillofacial emergencies.

Further development of a candidate’s special interest in other areas of Maxillofacial Surgery will be encouraged and there is scope to develop these interests across all sites.

Person specification

Education, Qualification & Specialist Skills

Essential criteria
  • Full Registration with the GMC and a registerable GDC qualification
  • FRCS (or equivalent) and MFDS (or equivalent
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the CCT
Desirable criteria
  • Training in appraisal & mentoring techniques
  • Medical Education qualification

Clinical Specialty Skills

Essential criteria
  • Clinical experience of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
  • Clinical experience in Head & Neck surgery
Desirable criteria
  • Specialty fellowship
  • ATLS provider

Skills, Knowledge & Aptitude

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching and training undergraduate and postgraduate students, and junior doctors and dentists
  • Innovative and supportive attitude. Evidence of working within a multidisciplinary team
  • Effective communication skills both written and verbal.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise complex demands
  • Publications in peer reviewed journals Evidence of Clinical Audit
Desirable criteria
  • Formal teaching/training experience.
  • Previous personal research experience.
