The work of the department covers all branches of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Oral Medicine. The unit has a particular interest in Head and Neck Cancer surgery, Orthognathic surgery and Trauma. The unit caters for a large amount of maxillofacial trauma and dentoalveolar surgery. Teaching and audit are regularly undertaken. The department operates a full shift system.
South Tees Hospital NHS Trust provides a comprehensive range of medical and surgical specialties. There are active postgraduate surgical and medical programmes and excellent library facilities are available. To apply for this position full registration with the General Dental Council is desirable but not essential.
Main duties of the job
This post will provide trainees with knowledge and experience of oral surgery within an oral and maxillofacial department with the aim to gain personal and professional career progression. This includes minor oral and maxillofacial surgery under local anaesthesia, IV sedation and general anaesthesia. Experience in the management of inpatients for acute and elective surgery will also be provided including opportunities to learn the techniques of management of maxillofacial trauma.
Clinical
Trainees will be expected to manage the day-to-day care of both acute and elective patients under the guidance of the Consultants. Attendance at outpatient clinics would be in a supernumerary capacity with supervision.
Operative experience and training will be given in a graded fashion under the close supervision of the consultants and with experience trainees will be expected to manage inpatients and undertake minor oral and maxillofacial surgery under LA with or without IV sedation and GA. There are extensive opportunities to learn the techniques of management of maxillofacial trauma and experience can be gained in routine hard and soft tissue surgery. It may be necessary to visit peripheral hospitals, for surgical lists, attend emergencies and dental treatments and there will be the opportunity for combined Clinics; Oncology, Orthognathic. All posts carry an out-of-hours commitment for oral and maxillofacial emergencies and care of inpatients.

Trainees are expected to attend Trust and Departmental Induction Programmes plus the Basic Skills Induction Course. CPR Training is compulsory for all new appointees. Study leave time is available for attendance on courses and for examinations; trainees are actively encouraged to attend courses.
Trainees will be expected to deliver some undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
Clinical Audit & Research
Trainees are expected to participate in, and attend the Regional Audit meetings.
Training, research and publications of papers is strongly encouraged
Review of Learning
All Dental Core Training Level Two/Three trainees will be expected to participate in a formal Review of Competence Progression (RCP) at the end of their training post and all trainees will be required to gather sufficient evidence and maintain an up to date portfolio throughout the duration of their training for submission to the RCP panel.
