The salary scale above has been agreed as part of the NHS Agenda for Change pay award for 2024/2025 and will be implemented in November 2024 backdated to 1st April 2024 where applicable.
Job overview
The Geriatric Medicine / Care of the Elderly (COTE) services in Glan Clwyd Hospital are based on two 24-bedded COTE wards (Wards 1 & 2). Combined acute and rehabilitation stroke beds are available on a specialist Stroke Unit that offers all elements of stroke care, including 24/7 out-of-hours stroke thrombolysis and a newly commenced thrombectomy service. The stroke service is facilitated by 3.5 Stroke Specialist Nurses. TIA clinics are held 5 days a week. The orthogeriatric service is supported by a consultant geriatrician in liaison with a Physician Associate and the orthopaedic department with orthopaedic consultants, a trauma nurse and junior doctors. A newly established Frailty Intervention Team (FIT) service is being developed at the hospital’s front door with 4-6 beds at the Emergency Quadrant (EQ).
Main duties of the job
We are seeking a dynamic Locum Care of the Elderly (COTE) Consultant to join the Department of Geriatric Medicine in Ysbyty Glan Clwyd. This is a fixed term post which will be based at Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (Central Area - Glan Clwyd Hospital) and will join an established team of 7 consultants (excluding this post) responsible for the provision of geriatric medicine services to the local area – 6 in Glan Clwyd Hospital and 2 in Llandudno General Hospital which is also under Central Area management. We would welcome special interests in any subspecialty, notably frailty and movement disorders, and we would be able to re-organize the job plan as required.

Qualifications and professional training
Essential criteria
- Full GMC registration and license to practice
- MRCP or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Higher degree (MD, PhD or equivalent)
- Publications in peer reviewed medical journals
- Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (or within 6 months of obtaining CCT) in Geriatric and General medicine or CESR
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- A wide experience in general and geriatric medicine including Parkinson’s Disease and other movement disorders
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working in a frailty unit or at the hospital front door
Audit and teaching
Essential criteria
- Experience of clinical audit
- Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff, therapy and nursing colleagues
Desirable criteria
- Teaching qualification
Personal attributes and skills
