Job overview
The Anaesthetic Department services a variety of surgical specialities including the regional Upper GI service as well as providing support to the Critical care Unit and Obstetric Unit. There is a well-developed Preoperative assessment unit, including CPET, prehabilitation and a Pain Management service. The successful candidate will provide anaesthesia for a variety of lists as outlined in the job plan, but this can be negotiated depending on the interests and experience of the successful candidate and the needs of the department.
The Critical Care Unit is currently a 12 bedded combined general ITU and HDU with mixed medical and surgical admissions. Recent investment into the unit has facilitated future expansion and designated teaching and simulation areas. Complementing an already very active teaching programme both within the Department and across North Wales.
The on call commitment is to the General Consultant Anaesthetist on call rota.
Main duties of the job
This is a full time post consisting of 10 PAs, of which, typically 7 are for Direct Clinical Care plus 3 SPAs. The post will have a commitment to anaesthesia for theatre with a sub speciality interest in orthopaedic and trauma anaesthesia.
The hospital has an Obstetrician led delivery unit with approximately 2700 - 3000 deliveries per annum. There are 10 weekday consultant anaesthetic sessions for Labour Ward, three elective caesarean section lists per week and an Anaesthetic Assessment clinic.
The on call requirement for this post is to join the General Anaesthetic & Obstetric on call rota. This is currently a 1:11 rota. Duties are to provide cover for emergency anaesthesia for all surgical specialities including DGH level paediatrics.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full registration with the GMC with licence to practise
- FRCA or equivalent Diploma
- CCT or equivalent with entry on Specialist Register for Anaesthesia or within six months of anticipated CCT date on the date of the Advisory Appointments Committee (equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)
- Minimum of 7 years’ experience in anaesthesia
- Minimum of 1 year worked within NHS
Desirable criteria
- Certificate of Medical Education
- A higher qualification, eg. MD, PhD
- European Diploma in Regional Anaesthesia
Clinical Skills and Training
Essential criteria
- Higher training in anaesthesia for orthopaedic surgery and regional anaesthesia
- Higher training general, urological and gynaecological surgery
- Higher training in obstetric anaesthesia
- Higher training in anaesthesia for day case and head, neck, and maxillofacial surgery.
- Higher training in sedation & non-theatre
- Higher training in paediatric anaesthesia with a minimum of 6m experience
- Smooth progression through training consistent with personal circumstances
Desirable criteria
- Portfolio evidencing a range of nerve blocks candidate is competent in.
- Evidence of the development of leadership within the work environment
- Attendance at courses in teaching, appraisal and mentorship.
- Proven interest in at least one area of research
- ALS / APLS / ATLS or equivalent
