Job overview

This is an opportunity to join our community nursing team in a permanent position, where we aim to meet the nursing and health needs of children and young people with complex and long-term conditions across Cornwall.  

This is a unique rotational post with the acute service at Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust. The post will form part of an 18-month service audit, looking at enhancing the experiences and skills of children’s nurses working across the community and acute settings. There will be an expectation of the post holder to partake by providing written and verbal feedback of their experiences and learning whilst in this role.  

We require your skills & enthusiasm to develop our strategy in supporting unnecessary hospital admissions and reduce length of stay by facilitating early and safe discharge from the acute trust as well as supporting children and young people with long term or palliative conditions. 

You will have current experience in looking after acutely unwell children. You must be motivated and possess acute clinical assessment skills and are able to communicate and organise effectively. 

Regular supervision and support is provided by a supportive and knowledgeable team.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide specialist nursing care, advice and support for children and young people with acute, long term, complex and palliative health care
  • Provide individualised training for families and carers and multi-agency partners in respect of nursing needs.
  • Participate in delivering a county wide children’s community nursing service working in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Participate in the transition between children’s and adult services where
  • Work across health, social, education and voluntary services to maximise the quality of life for children, young people, and their families.

Education /Qualifications and Relevant Experience

Essential criteria
  • Current professional registration – NMC
  • Professional qualification – RSCN
  • Evidence of updating continuing professional development
  • Experience of teaching or training families and professionals
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working with students

Skills and Aptitude

Essential criteria
  • Can recognise a deteriorating child and understand the escalation process
  • Experience of advising families and professionals regarding a child or young persons condition and care needs.
  • Intravenous trained and competent
  • Experience of coordinating and or managing patient care.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including record keeping
  • Competent IT skills
  • Ability to contribute to service development
Desirable criteria
  • Clinical supervision skills

Knowledge and abilities

Essential criteria
  • Post registration experience of caring for children with health needs, such as tracheostomies, enteral feeding, medication administration, oxygen therapy and wound management.
  • Experience of working within an acute paediatric setting post registration
  • Experience of coordinating and or managing patient care.
  • A working knowledge of CQC standards in respect of care delivery
  • Good knowledge of child safeguarding
  • Up to date with relevant Children’s Nursing legislation
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working within the community/ward setting
  • Prioritisation of work when planning care, balancing unpredictable high levels of clinical activity and demands
  • Experience working in end-of-life care
