Job overview

Applications are invited for the post of Medical Laboratory Assistant to work in the Blood Sciences department at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro.

It's an exciting time with a new Blood Sciences laboratory open covering haematology, blood transfusion and clinical chemistry. The job purpose is to provide laboratory, clerical & data entry support and reception cover as part of a laboratory team. 

No previous experience required as full training will be provided.

 

Main duties of the job

The receipt of samples from within the hospital and surrounding GP practices.

Sample preparation, request data entry and presentation for analysis as appropriate.

To support the specific and technical and clerical duties alongside Biomedical Scientists as part of a team to facilitate the smooth running of the service.

This is a full time post working 37.5 hours per week. A flexible attitude to working hours is essential. The hours are currently within a framework of 08.00–20.00 including weekend & Bank Holiday working. These arrangements are subject to continuing review.

Essential criteria
  • CSE / GCSE in 4 subjects including Math’s, Science and English at grade 4 and above.
Desirable criteria
  • Recent educational achievements relating to laboratory services.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Keyboard, clerical.
  • Previous laboratory experience
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of LIMS (WinPath) data entry
  • Experience of using analysers

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Must be precise, methodical and dextrous
  • Must have the ability to work with human fluid and tissue
  • Adept at using automation.
  • Must be able to work under pressure.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of following written protocols / policies
  • Ability to prioritise
