Ward Leader

Band 7

Job overview

We are looking for an existing or aspiring Ward Leader to lead the Acute Frailty Unit

You will lead a multi disciplinary team to deliver a frailty pathway, to support  the ward’s inpatients, whilst taking overall clinical responsibility for the Ward. You will be supported by a Clinical Matron linked directly to the Ward. This role requires you to be flexible, resilient and forward thinking.

This is a unique opportunity to make a significant positive impact to flow in frailty pathways and expediting safe discharge, particularly for patients where a protracted length of hospital stay would not be in their best interests. We are looking for a colleague with:

Proven experience managing a care delivery team (ideally a multi-professional team)

A commitment to the highest standards of clinical care, supporting older people living with frailty in hospital

The ability to work well under pressure in a complex and changing environment.

Excellent organisational and time management skills, being able to prioritise demanding workloads to meet deadlines.

A willingness to work in ward staffing numbers to support clinical practice, and safe staffing as appropriate.

This is a full time 37.5 hours per week role.

Main duties of the job

To be the accountable lead nurse/midwife/AHP in their clinical area who provides effective, professional nursing/midwifery/AHP leadership and direction for the nursing/midwifery/AHP workforce and wider ward / department team.

Thorough ownership of their clinical area to be accountable for implementing, driving and monitoring the Quality and Safety agenda and to monitor standards across clinical areas in leadership exchange/partnership initiatives.

To be a highly competent, knowledgeable, and visible practitioner setting the highest standards of care and ensuring the provision of appropriate, evidence-based care for all patients / clients.

Ensure the safe, effective, and efficient management of all workforce and financial resources within their clinical area.

To act as a role model and skilled practitioner to inspire excellence, constantly demonstrating the highest standards of care and professionalism.

With the support of the Clinical Matron, lead the recruitment and retention of a skilled, competent, and effective nursing/midwifery/AHP workforce for their clinical area and contribute to the identification of new nursing/midwifery/AHP and support roles within their clinical specialty.

To demonstrate an innovative and progressive attitude to the continual improvement of patient care through evidence-based practice and ensure that such evidence is reflected in clinical practice and subject to regular audit

We are a teaching hospital in partnership with the University of Exeter Medical School, University of Plymouth School of Nursing and Midwifery, and Peninsula Dental School.
