Job overview
We have a vacancy for a Medical Secretary in the administration office within the department of Diagnostic and Molecular Pathology.
The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust provides comprehensive healthcare to the people of Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. The department serves a resident population of over 600,000 which generates over 35,000 Histology requests, 3,500 routine cytology requests and 1,400 post mortems.
As a Medical Secretary you will be working as part of a team providing secretarial and administrative support to a busy department. Ideally, you will have at least 12 months medical secretarial experience and a general understanding of the NHS. We also expect excellent word processing and audio typing skills, and the ability to work under pressure. Good skills with a variety of computer packages would be advantageous. You will be required to have a professional attitude to work, work closely with staff at all levels, with the ability to work independently or as part of a team, and have an eye for detail and accuracy.
The position is full time 37.5hrs per week and a flexible attitude to working hours is necessary. Working hours are mainly between 08:00 and 17:00 hours including some weekend working.

Main duties of the job
To provide comprehensive secretarial and administrative support to consultants and key team members across more than one specialty and to provide cover for colleagues as necessary.
To undertake all aspects of administrative work associated with the Diagnostic and Molecular Pathology service.
Operate within a highly flexible team for the effective overall delivery of patient care, through multi-disciplinary working and knowledge of consultant, specialty, hospital and inter-agency practice.
Maintain a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of medical terminology across all health clinical specialties in Acute and Primary Care.
Provide support to consultants and key team members in the delivery of other roles e.g. Clinical Director, Head of Department, Governance Lead, etc.
Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with the Trust Policy.
