Job overview
We have an exciting opportunity at the Royal Cornwall Hospital for a Staff Nurse to join our committed team on the Medical Day Unit within the specialty of Specialist Services & Surgery.
To work as a skilled member of the nursing team, to assist in the provision of high standards of holistic care to patients.
To assist in timely safe administration of treatment.
To understand the clinical standards including medicines management.
To assist in the creation of a welcoming, caring, and safe environment for the patients.
To communicate effectively with the multi-disciplinary team.
Part time - 37 hours per week (Monday to Friday, no weekends, no night duty, and no bank holidays)
Main duties of the job
Assist in the provision of the highest standard of nursing care for the patients.
Develop and maintain clinical skills and knowledge necessary.
Ensure competent clinical skills of phlebotomy and cannulation is maintained.
Understanding of all drugs used in the unit and to undertake relevant drug administration training.
Help ensure clinical practice is evidence based.
Use the Patient Administration System (PAS) in accordance with Trust policy and procedure.
Assist in ensuring the safety of the unit, actively participating in clinical audit, clinical risk and quality issues, including reporting of critical incidents.
Assist in the preparation of patient details and pre procedure checks are completed including blood sampling prescription completed by consultant the day before attendance.
Ensure timely admission and discharge of patient activity is recorded on the SWIFT, a discharge summary is completed to the GP.
Demonstrate a professional approach to work, acting in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
Have knowledge of and adhere to unit and Trust policy and professional standards and assist in ensuring that team members do likewise.
Ensure documentation is complete and up to date, in line with NMC and Trust guidelines.
Identify own learning needs and ensure own professional development is maintained by keeping up to date with practice development.
Supervise and orientate learners and new staff, when requested.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Level 1 Registered Nurse with valid NMC registration / students pending registration
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of professional portfolio
- Assessing & Mentoring qualification. Commitment to obtain assessing / mentoring qualification
Experience
Essential criteria
- A minimum of six months experience in an acute Trust within the last twelve months (this can include student placement)
Desirable criteria
- Experience within the speciality
Skills
Essential criteria
- Understanding of evidence based practice to enhance care
- Understanding of professional and current issues in nursing.
- Understanding of the importance of research and evidence based practice

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
