Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic, skilled and experienced, Specialist Occupational Therapist to join our Stroke Team at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust for a fixed period of 1 year starting from January 2025.

Main duties of the job

To provide a high standard of Occupational Therapy service to stroke patients at Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust.

To provide specialist assessment, treatment, and goal setting of patients on the wards. Some patients may have complex and/or chronic presentations. To determine clinical diagnosis and Occupational Therapy treatment indicated. To maintain records as an autonomous practitioner.

You will highly develop specialist skills under the guidance of the Senior staff.

To provide clinical cross cover within your team as delegated by your Clinical Team Lead.

To attend clinical level discussions / meetings relating to your area of work as delegated by your Clinical Team Lead.

To be based at the Royal Cornwall Hospital as a static post on Acute Stroke Unit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To be responsible for ensuring the effective selection and use of the treatment resources (both human and equipment) available in the department, on the wards, and in the patient’s home environment.

 To be responsible for the equipment used in carrying out Occupational Therapy duties, and to adhere to departmental policy, including competence to use equipment and to ensure the safe use of equipment by others through, teaching, training, and supervision of practice.

 To comply with the College of Occupational Therapy and the Health Professions Council codes of ethics and rules of professional conduct.

 To demonstrate a sound understanding of Clinical Governance and be active in applying to your work situation, including maintaining own continuous professional development (CPD) by keeping abreast of any new trends, national guidelines, and developments, and incorporate them as necessary into your work.

 To maintain clinical competence and be an active member of the in-service training programme by attending and delivering presentations and training sessions at staff meetings, tutorials, and training sessions both in house and by attending external courses and practising reflective practice. To work with your Band 7 in contributing to multi-professional education.

 To participate in the staff appraisal scheme and Personal Development Plan (PDP) as an appraisee and an appraiser.

 To monitor and evaluate treatment to measure progress and ensure the effectiveness of the intervention.

 To be actively involved in the collection of appropriate data and statistics for the use of the department.

 To comply with the departmental and organisational policies.

 To ensure that you implement policy and service development changes.

 To undertake any other duties that might be considered appropriate by the Therapy Management Structure.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree in Occupational Therapy or equivalent
  • HCPC registered
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of the College of Occupational Therapy.
  • Membership of appropriate clinical interest groups.
  • Evidence of further formal study

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Comprehensive experience of working in an acute hospital setting - ideally to include stroke or neuro experience.
  • Demonstrable post qualification experience
  • Experience of working within a multidisciplinary team, a good understanding of their roles and respect for the other professionals within the team.
  • Experience of working with a team of people including qualified and unqualified staff.
  • Experience of working independently and taking the responsibility for sole decision making.
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to demonstrate a broad depth of experience from working in a variety of fields (eg, neurology, eldercare,medicine,surgery)
  • Experience of assessing patients following a stroke

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Up-to-date clinical skills.
  • A good understanding of anatomy and physiology.
  • Experience in the use of; ADL equipment, Mobility Independence aids, Basic orthotics Moving and handling equipment.
  • Computer literate
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of teaching (formal or informal).
  • Evidence of clinical audit/research activity Presentation Skills
