We have some exciting news at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust.
The team at South Lakes are looking to recruit enthusiastic and dynamic band 5 preceptorship midwives .
This post will offer the opportunity for you to work on our birthing centre based at South Lakes to consolidate your learning as a newly qualified band 5 midwife.
South Lakes Birth Centre is located within Furness General Hospital in Barrow-in-Furness and is our most recent purpose built maternity unit. The Birth Centre included a Day Assessment Unit, two Maternity Theatres. there is a Level 1 Special Care Baby Unit, providing special care to 4 Neonates and also 2 dedicated Transitional Care beds.
On successful completion of your preceptorship and transition to a band 6 midwife, you will then join our community midwifery team who are also based at the south lakes birthing centre and will become part of the community midwifery team.
Ideally you will be happy to work 30+ hours per week, be a car driver and have a flexible approach to work within the team to provide overnight availability in the form of on call, to help facilitate the home birth service and if acuity demands as part of the escalation policy to provide care on the South Lakes Birth Centre (normally once or twice per week) as a community midwife.

To work as an autonomous practitioner within multi-disciplinary teams.
After successful completion of the preceptorship and progression to a band 6 midwife, you will work within the community midwifery team and maintain a good relationship with other members of the team ensuring the women receives optimal care.

To provide high quality women centred maternity care.
To provide effective leadership, optimise teaching opportunities
and give support to all grades of staff; planning and directing
activities to provide the optimal standard of care.
To give appropriate education to women and their families and
give necessary care, advice and supervision throughout the
pregnancy continuum.
To be happy to work alongside and facilitate the learning of both student midwives and medical students.
To ensure appropriate referral for mother or child, as required to
other agencies and Specialist midwifery team.
To give necessary care advice and supervision to women and their families, wherever possible/appropriate.

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
Our community services for adults are provided in people’s homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.
