Job overview

The role involves working within a small team responsible for the maintenance, repair, management and commissioning of a wide range of medical devices used throughout the Trust and in the local community.  The role will also include working at Westmorland General Hospital and Royal Lancaster Infirmary as required.  


Successful candidates will possess:

  • The ability to communicate effectively with all members of staff, visitors and patients
  •  Good organizational skills and be able to manage their own day to day workload.
  • Experience of working within an engineering environment with prior knowledge of electrical, electronic systems used within the medical environment.
  • ONC or HNC in an engineering discipline or equivalent.
  •  A full current driving license.
  •  A considerate and tactful approach when working in close proximity to patients.
  • The ability to enter and maintain computerized records.
  • The ability to see allocated projects through to completion

Main duties of the job

To provide technical expertise to support the safe use of medical devices including the following activities

  •  Planned maintenance
  • Servicing
  • Repair and calibration
  • Implementation of MHRA and supplier safety alert
  • Support for clinical colleagues to ensure the devices they use for patient care are safe and suitable for use

Working for our organisation

You will work in a small team based on the Furness general hospital site consisting of 5 engineers who undertake the maintenance and repair on a number of medical devices located both within the acute hospital setting and community provided services. 

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post will include the following duties

  • Service and repair of medical devices located on the Furness general site and surrounding community operated sites
  • Support clinical colleagues with any technical information required to ensure medical devices are used and operated in a safe manner 
  • Acceptance testing of new medical devices 
  • Safe Disposal of Medical devices at the end of their clinical life 
  • Implantation of safety alerts as required by monitoring and regulatory bodies 
  • Actively work within the services ISO9001 quality system and identify areas of improvement 
  • Undertake the management of delegated secondary duties as required, these may include COSSH management, Health and safety department lead, Scrap/Waste management , Indemnity control for loan devices

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Professional electronics knowledge acquired through HND in electronics, medical engineering or equivalent with additional practical knowledge gained through technical training, short courses and developed practical experience.
Desirable criteria
  • Degree level qualification in either Medical device maintenance or electrical and electronic engineering
  • Physiology training to cover a range of equipment.
  • VRCT Membership

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Analysis and diagnosing of faults in complex Electronic/Mechanical equipment.
  • Experience of safe operating systems used in the maintenance and repair of complex electronic equipment.
  • Self-management-workload planning-routine maintenance, prioritising breakdown maintenance.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of regular training courses to further skills and experience.
  • Experience of Medical device calibration and maintenance

Skills, ability and knowledg

Essential criteria
  • Effective verbal and written communication with colleagues at all levels of the organisation and with external agencies and industry..
  • Highly developed skills:-manual dexterity, co-ordination and sensory skills for use of precision tools & materials in the maintaining of delicate equipment
  • Experiance of Quality systems and database management.
  • Ability to work in awkward positions and unpleasant environments e.g. plant rooms, behind patient bed heads and within theatre environments
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge and understanding of Health Service issues.
  • Experience of working within the scope of MHRA Managing Medical Devices (April 2015)
  • Medical Device and Equipment Management for Hospital and Community based Organisations.
  • Working within an ISO 9001:2015 Quality system environment.
