Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Reception team in the Emergency Department at Furness General Hospital 

You will be the first point of contact for many of our patients/relatives and will be required to have excellent communication and hospitality skills.

The role will require shift work to cover a 24 hour period so at times will include working night shifts. 

 

Main duties of the job

You will be providing a wide range of admin and receptionist skills which will include: Booking in patients that self present to the department or arrive via ambulance, Working closely with the nursing team/clinical staff booking appointments and submitting referrals for other specialities. 

The post holder will be required to deal with patients and their relatives both face to face and over the telephone in a sensitive and efficient manner. 

Previous experience of the electronic patient record system - Lorenzo is desirable but not essential as training will be provided. 

 

 

 

 

 

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Our community services for adults are provided in people’s homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BTEC or NVQ Level 3 in office administration or equivalent experience
  • Good standard of general education
Desirable criteria
  • ECDL or RSA Level 2/3

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience of making appointments and reception duties
  • Experience of dealing with the public
  • Evidence of computer skills including Microsoft Office
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of NHS information systems

  • Highly developed communication skills with sensitivity to the needs of the patient, particularly where there maybe barriers to understanding (for example, learning difficulties, deafness, language)
