Locum Consultant Breast Surgeon

NHS Medical & Dental: Locum Consultant

Job overview

The Breast Unit sees approximately 3000 patients a year and treats more than 300 women with breast cancer 40% of whom are diagnosed following screening mammography. The breast units at Cumberland Infirmary and West Cumberland Hospital are equipped with state of the art diagnostic equipment (digital mammography, tomosynthesis, breast ultrasound, breast MRI). Symptomatic Breast Services are provided at both hospitals and include diagnostic breast clinics, follow up sessions, multidisciplinary team meetings and surgery. Treatment is provided by the Northern Centre for Cancer Care on the Cumberland Infirmary and West Cumberland Hospital sites.

New patients are seen at “one-stop” clinics, where after clinical assessment patients proceed to imaging and biopsy, if indicated, at the same appointment. Historically, new patients were seen in one-stop clinics at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle. However, considerable investment and development have been undertaken to offer one stop diagnostic services in Whitehaven and to broaden the range of breast procedures offered in West Cumberland Hospital, so that patients can enjoy the same benefits at both hospital sites.

This is a 12 month fixed-term post.
