Consultant in Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases

NHS Medical& Dental: Consultant

Job overview

The Department of Infection Sciences in North Cumbria Hospitals is looking for an enthusiastic new consultant colleague to join us on our journey to provide high quality Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ID) Services for the future in an organisation committed to clinical leadership and medical education.

This is an exciting new post created by reconfiguration of a vacant Consultant Medical Microbiologist position due to relocation of the previous post holder. This post is full-time (10 PAs). It is anticipated that the post holder will have the drive to develop a local Infectious Diseases service and further areas of interest to complement the existing team of Consultant Microbiologists at NCIC. There is also an opportunity for
an honorary title to deliver one session of teaching at the
new Pears Cumbria School of Medicine.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a committed Doctor to become an integral part of the infection service team. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the existing Medical Microbiology team and contribute to developing an Infectious Diseases service. They will be expected to participate in audit and quality improvement. We welcome candidates interested in developing new services in North Cumbria.

This post is based in the Infection Sciences Department at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle (CIC). The Department of Infection Sciences consists of Microbiology, Virology and Immunology, all centralised at CIC. Consultants will be required to work across site on a rotational basis at the West Cumberland Hospital (WCH) in Whitehaven.

The appointee to this post will take part in a one in four on-call Consultant Microbiologist rota. There is provision for remote access to the Trust’s IT systems which allows off-site access to results and report validation. Working from home on occasions can be arranged with agreement from the Clinical Director. The on-call microbiologist is on-site on Saturday and time off in lieu is given for this commitment. Other on-call, including Sunday, is usually provided remotely. It is expected that the appointee will contribute equally to the out-of-hours work and on-call rota.

Working for our organisation

We provide Acute Hospital Care in Carlisle and Whitehaven for our local population of 320,000, supported by Community Services and 6 Community Hospitals.

We’re on an exciting journey, with a commitment to clinical leadership, research, and medical education. A new medical school opens in Carlisle in 2025. Our Trust is a rewarding and friendly place to establish your career. There has never been a better time to join us in North Cumbria.
