Job overview

North Cumbria Integrated Trust is looking to employ an experience  Vascular Registrar with ST5+ level experience into the Vascular department. 

The successful candidate will join the existing team of vascular surgeons and nurse specialists who provide high quality vascular services across the Northern Lake district in Cumbria and provide an excellent working and living environment. Carlisle is 53 miles from Newcastle and well connected via the West Coast mainline and the M6 to Scotland and the rest of the UK.

Vascular investigations are supported by a vascular ultrasound scientist, CT and MRI services. There is a fully equipped angiography suite and vascular theatre with mobile imaging facilities. There are 3 interventional radiologists based at CIC and there are excellent opportunities for surgically-led IR procedures both in theatre and in the IR suite.

There are regular weekly MDT meetings. The Vascular department has close working ties with the Tertiary unit at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle including weekly MDTs via video conferencing and twice yearly clinical conferences.

The registrar will have a named educational supervisor, training needs and resources are tailored to the individual personal development plans.  Teaching and supervision of the F1 doctors is essential and expected.

In the course of work the jobholder liaises with nursing, professional, technical, social work and administrative staff.

Main duties of the job

The trust registrar doctor will be responsible for the day-to-day care of all patients under the Vascular Consultants.  The programme of training for each individual doctor will be flexible depending on his/her particular needs and stage of training.

The Trust Doctor Registrar will provide cover on a Partial Shift Rota, prospective cover of STR colleagues leave.  They can usually expect to provide supervision and support for a Foundation Doctor on call.

The Registrar will be expected to play a full and active role in the post-graduate programme including departmental meetings, multidisciplinary meetings and junior teaching. 

There will also be opportunities for teaching medical students, overseas clinical attachment doctors and nurses on an occasional basis.

A regular programme of service and educational meetings underpins the service, plus commitment to audit and teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. The scale of the hospitals permits excellent and effective working relationships between Hospital Departments and Primary Care.

Attainments & Training

Essential criteria
  • MBBS MB ChB or equivalent registerable qualification
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council
  • Experience in managing vascular surgical patients and assisting in vascular surgery
Desirable criteria
  • MRCS, FRCS or EBVS
  • Experience from a vascular training programme (UK or overseas)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Prior clinical experience in vascular surgery, minimum of 2 years of vascular experience at ST5+ level.
  • An understanding of evidence based medicine
  • Postgraduate surgical experience
  • Able to demonstrate appropriate logbook experience in Vascular Surgery
  • Interest in research
  • Involvement in Audit project
  • Able to demonstrate Continuing Professional Development
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of Vascular Surgery in the UK.
