An exciting opportunity has arisen for an apprenticeship within CIU - Community Diagnostic Centre in Kendal. This apprenticeship is Healthcare science associates who will
be either new recruits or existing employees. Achievement of the
qualification will enable learners to progress within the workplace
or progress to higher education to study to become a healthcare
science practitioner.
The apprenticeship would be a Level 4 Diploma in Healthcare Science and has been developed to give learners the opportunity to:
• engage in learning that is relevant to them and which will
give them opportunities to develop a range of techniques,
personal and other skills, and attributes essential for successful
performance in working life
• achieve a nationally recognised Level 4 vocationally-related
qualification and individuals will be eligible to join the Academy for HCS’s (AHCS) accredited Associate Register at Level 4.

Pay will be Annex U/21:
• Year 1- 70% of the top of a Band 4
• Year 2 - 75% of the top of a Band 4
Main duties of the job
The CIU works across 3 UHMBT sites –Furness General Hospital ( FGH ) Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) and Royal Lancaster Infirmary ( RLI ). The successful applicants will be required to work on the above locations although it is anticipated that the post will be centred on the FGH site.
The successful applicants will be reliable, hardworking, caring, flexible and enthusiastic individuals, who are able to demonstrate initiative, good organisational and communicative skills. The abilities to integrate well with the existing team, to work independently and to contribute to service development as well as quality improvement are essential
Training will be provided - incorporating the 2 year foundation degree in Healthcare Sciences.
The Healthcare Scientist Associate Practitioner will be required to provide support to the clinical physiology team, working in areas such as Electrocardiograms (ECG), ambulatory ECG and BP hook up and analysis, prolonged ECG monitoring and analysis, pharmacological stress testing, and assisting in ECG stress testing, basic lung function, sleep studies, bronchial challenge and assisting in CPAP trials.
To work effectively and efficiently as part of the Clinical Investigations team in providing a high quality service, ensuring the highest standard of patient care.
Working for our organisation
We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Essential criteria
- Genuine interest in work of the Cardio-Respiratory Investigation Centre.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working in Hospital or caring environment.
- Experience of working within the clinical investigation unit team
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- GSCE grade C/ 4 in English and Maths - or Functional Skills in English and Maths Level 2
- Completion of Foundation degree in Health care Sciences
- SCST Certificate in Electrocardiology
- Computer literate, all investigations involve data entry, initialization and download of processed information.
Desirable criteria
- BTEC /NVQ in Health care
- BLS/ILS
