Job overview

An independent practitioner with the ability to perform, interpret and report on a broad range of  respiratory, sleep and oesophageal investigations.  There is a structured training schedule that you will follow and once deemed competent there will be an expectation that you undertake the ARTP Practitioner qualification. Once this is achieved you will also provide training to current and new members of the team, many healthcare professional colleagues within and external to the Trust,

Work within the guidelines and sphere of professional practice in the delivery of all aspects of our specialist services within the Cardio Respiratory Unit.

Duties are to be undertaken whilst maintaining a caring and compassionate environment. 

Main duties of the job

To undertake a range of specialised respiratory & Sleep investigations and treatments as listed to aid diagnosis and treatment of referred patients. 
To include but not limited to:

  • Spirometry
  • Bronchodilator responsiveness studies
  • Measurement of static lung volumes by body plethysmography. 
  • Gas transfer diffusion test 
  • Fractional exhale nitric oxide
  • Impulse oscillometry
  • Measurement of respiratory muscle strength MIP/MEP 
  •  Bronchial Provocation challenge testing 
  • Overnight oximetry including downloading and report preparation
  • Respiratory poligraphy including downloading and report preparation
  • Cardio-Pulmonary Exercise Tests
  • Oesophageal Manometry
  • CPAP diagnosis and treatment

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI) Lancaster and Westmorland General (WGH) Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom hospital and GP practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe and Ulverston Community health centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of general hospital services with full emergency department and Critical/ High Dependency units and various consultants lead services.

WGH provides a range of general hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment centre, that can help with a range of non life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care, including outpatient, diagnostics, therapies, day case, inpatient surgery.  In addition, a local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilitates from Morecambe Bay.

Our community services for adults are provided in people’s homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.

Person specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc in Clinical Physiology or equivalent
  • HPC/RCCP Registration
  • ILS
  • Evidence of maintaining relevant Continuing Professional Development
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant professional qualifications eg ARTP

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Relevant and appropriate post degree clinical experience.
  • Experience of non-routine, specialist and advanced diagnostic investigations gained through in-depth experience and accredited courses
  • Able to perform range of specialist diagnostic investigations on patients in a variety of clinical settings.
  • Undertakes testing and trials of clinical equipment
  • Evidence of highly developed written and oral communication skills in English in a variety of settings.
  • Ability to travel between the Trust sites as required.
Desirable criteria
  • Highly developed IT skills e.g. • use of E mail, Microsoft Word, • Excel, Power Point and Access.
