Consultant Colorectal Surgeon

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Job overview

“Lake District Surgery. High quality care in stunning surroundings!”

The Lake District is quite probably the most beautiful region in England and not surprisingly the National Park is the most visited in the country. Holiday makers are attracted here by the stunning scenery, the wealth of leisure activities and the multitude of good places to eat and drink. But why holiday here when you could be living and working here?

We are looking for a General Surgery Consultant, with a focus on emergency and colorectal surgery to join a well-functioning team. The post has become available following departure of a consultant colleague.  The post holder will undertake initially 10 PAs including 1.5 SPAs and 1 admin PA. On-calls will be at Royal Lancaster Infirmary, a level-two trauma centre, on a 1 in 8 non-resident basis.

Our strong ties with Lancaster University offer great opportunities to get involved with teaching medical students and with research; the launch of the Health Innovation Campus brings us further local opportunity.

We are therefore delighted to offer this wonderful opportunity for a suitably trained General surgeon to take up a post working in a successful, modern, and welcoming department, delivering outstanding results in a breathtakingly beautiful part of England.

Interview date is to be confirmed early to mid September

Main duties of the job

You will be expected to support the General Surgery services offered by the Trust and provide the highest quality care to the local population. You will be supported by middle-grade doctors, including deanery trainees and substantive staff, with ward support from FY doctors and nurse practitioners.

You will be part of a team of five colorectal surgeons and five general surgeons with endocrine, upper gastrointestinal and complex hernia interests.

Colorectal Surgery has a well-functioning MDT with radiology, oncology, radiotherapy and advanced endoscopy support. The pre-operative care is well supported with CPEX and pre-operative specialist colorectal services.

There are close links with the regional services at Preston for anal cancer, management of early rectal and complex pelvic cancers. Liver metastases are managed at East Lancashire Hospitals. The cancer services are supported by 5 CNS’s and 4 stoma nurses.

You will undertake 10 PAs including 1.5 SPAs and 1 admin PA.

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospital s-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Our community services for adults are provided in people’s homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals.
