We have an exciting opportunity to expand the Health and Wellbeing Team here at Morecambe Bay.
We're seeking enthusiastic maternity support workers, with an interest in Public Health, to join our team, primarily supporting women with smoking cessation.
This smoking cessation post encourages people to develop healthier
lifestyles through the provision of support and information based on the
public health priorities and smoking prevention programmes.
Main duties of the job
Proactively engages with patients to build & maintain positive relationships
Manage a small caseload of clients, to actively support smoking cessation & improve health outcomes
Provide Nicotine Replacement Therapy following recognised training
Provide evidence-based public health information & support
Understands the importance of physical & mental wellbeing of the woman & her family
Competent in Safe Sleep advice
Provide good quality personalised care in accordance with local & national standards
Understands & gains consent when providing care
Recognises changes in mother or baby’s condition & reporting concerns to the midwife
Ensures own safe clinical practice acting in the limits of your own competence & authority
Assists in the implementation of clinical care performing a range of clinical skills
Develop own knowledge & practice, including reflecting on practice to improve & apply learning
Demonstrates an understanding of & uses care plans
Communicate & work as an effective team member promoting health & wellbeing
Awareness of safeguarding & reporting concerns to the midwife
Demonstrates compassion by recognising & responding to individual needs
Maintain professional conduct at all times
Competent to support women in their chosen method of feeding giving clear & consistent information
Recognises the importance of contemporaneous documentation

Working for our organisation
We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Essential
Essential criteria
- Care Certificate with Evidence of completion of MSW Level 2 and level 3 competencies or willingness to work towards level 3. 5 GCSE’s Grade C/5 including English and Maths or equivalent qualification NVQ 2 or equivalent and commitment to development within role
- Previous experience as a Health Care Assistant or Support Worker in a similar role
- Knowledge of Smoking Cessation
- Basic computer /IT skills
- Ability to perform physiological observations on adults.
- Ability to use own initiative requiring minimum supervision
- Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
- Able to understand and comply with detailed procedures
- Able to work the hours required by the needs of the service including evenings, nights and weekends where necessary.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working with new-born infants Experience of working shift patterns Customer care experience
- Understanding of how to follow a care plan.
- Understand the rationale for risk assessments
- Competent in venepuncture
- Knowledge of NHS/ hospital systems
