Job overview

We are excited to offer this unique new band 6 role within our paediatric service to support with the care and management of children within our service presenting with mental health needs. You will work alongside our teams playing a crucial role in coordinating the appropriate care for these children and young people. This role is cross bay, supporting young people at Furness General Hospital and Royal Lancaster Infirmary.

 

 

Main duties of the job

  • To be a professional role model, leading and co-ordinating the management of children and young people (CYP) with mental health needs
  • To liaise with the ward team to support  training and education.
  • To provide advice and support to paediatric nurses and other MDT members on the management of children with mental health problems/ disabilities and long term health problems on the wards
  • To identify children with combined paediatric, psychiatric illnesses and ensure that they receive appropriate treatment
  • At all times ensure that the needs of the patient are placed at the centre of care delivery.

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Our community services for adults are provided in people’s homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.

Education and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Children’s Nurse/MH nurse
  • Post basic qualification relevant to children’s/MH nursing
  • Teaching and assessing qualification
  • Desirable
  • 1st degree or willingness to undertake same

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Recent experience at senior staff nurse level within children’s nursing/MH nursing
  • Evidence of clinical competence in a wide range of paediatric/MH nursing skills
  • Understanding of the setting and monitoring of standards
  • Evidence of teaching and developing staff.
  • Desirable
  • Recent leadership development or willingness to undertake course
