Job overview
We have a vacancy for an enthusiastic, well-motivated secretary to join our medical secretarial team within the surgery and Critical care division at Royal Lancaster Infirmary. Current or recent Secretarial experience, with a typing qualification is desirable, together with a good standard of English. Knowledge of medical terminology and IT systems would be an advantage, although training will be given.
Working as part of a small team, you will be required to liaise with patients and a number of internal and external departments, agencies and providers; therefore highly developed communication skills are essential.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will be expected to provide a robust and comprehensive secretarial and administration service to the Specialty team, Service Managers, Senior Medical Staff and their teams.
Working for our organisation
We operate from three main hospitals-Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.
WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Education and qualifications
Essential criteria
- Educated to GCSE level or equivalent to include Maths and English language
- NVQ level 3 or equivalent experience in business admin
Desirable criteria
- ECDL or recognised typing qualification or relevant experience
- OCR/RSA Level 3 or ability to type 60 words per minute
- Audio typing equivalent qualification or experience
Experience
Essential criteria
- Previous administration and/or clerical experience
- Audio typing experience or relevant IT skills and experience
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working with a digital dictating system
- Previous secretarial experience
Skills, abillity and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of data protection and the requirement for confidentiality
- Evidence of clear communication, skills, with the ability to use tact and diplomacy at all times
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft office 365 packages
- Proficiency in English Language
