Job overview
We are looking to appoint a Consultant in Microbiology to further develop our highly rated services at Chesterfield Royal Hospital. This is an exciting opportunity, and it is anticipated that there will be occasion for the appointee to develop a sub-specialty interest within the role.
This post will bring our complement of consultant microbiologists to 4.45 WTE. You will become part of a team which takes joint responsibility for the medical supervision of the Trust’s microbiology department, and infection control processes.
Applications are welcome from any infection specialists, whether Microbiologists or Infectious Diseases Doctors, or Consultant clinical scientists.
The out of hours commitment will be worked on a 1 in 5 basis following successful recruitment of this post. Out of hours cover is a telephone advice service for laboratory or clinical staff, and there is currently no requirement to attend the laboratory at weekends, with authorising done remotely.
Main duties of the job
Main Responsibilities
· Provision of a diagnostic and therapeutic service for the Microbiology service at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, in conjunction with other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
· Attendance at the Trust’s Drug and Therapeutic and Infection Control Committees providing advice on microbiological issues.
· Ensure service delivery across the wider team, empowering and supporting others to deliver optimum services.
· Participate in out of hours cover from home at a frequency of 1 in 5.
· Maintain accurate and timely clinical record keeping using the Trust’s electronic systems.
· Play an active part in the training and supervision of medical staff in junior and non-training grades and the development of support staff, supporting and leading the delivery of education for trainee medical staff and medical students.
· Participate effectively in Clinical Audit Clinical Governance.
· Engage with requirements for Continuing Professional Development in accordance with guidelines set down by the Royal College.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Leadership, Management & Service Development
· Undertake evaluation and monitoring of clinical practice incorporating evidence-based principles and suitable outcome measures.
Engage with the Divisional and Trust business planning processes and wider service development as required.
· Work collaboratively with the Divisional Senior Team to take an active role in the management of the Department.
· Work with colleagues to play a full part in developing and implementing new ways of working in line with modernisation principles that are fit for the future.
· Review the best use of departmental staffing and other resources to ensure the maximum efficiency of microbiology services.
Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MBChB or equivalent medical qualification.
- Full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise.
- Entry on the Specialist Register or eligible within 6 months of the date of interview.
Desirable criteria
- Science degree or Higher Degree (excluding those describing routine pathology training).
Experience
Essential criteria
- Clinical supervision experience/skills
- Quality/audit project experience
- Experience of participation in CPD.
- Ability to work unsupervised at consultant level in clinical microbiology (and/or infectious diseases) and infection control.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of microbiology (or infectious diseases) service development.
- Experience of pathology networks and collaborative inter-laboratory working.
- Experience in a managerial role.
- Experience in working in an infection control team.
Skills
Essential criteria
- Good written and oral communication skills.
Desirable criteria
- Motivation skills, leadership skills and flexibility.
